Johnston pen. 73

Both sides hit the woodwork, both sides had a “goal” disallowed and both number nines scored, but Adam Johnston’s penalty proved the difference between the two sides and edged City closer to the Championship.

Tow Law exerted most of the early pressure down the slope, but neither side found it easy to get into any pattern of play with a pudding of a ball. City defended a free-kick and the first corner with consummate ease, but their play lacked the initial composure of the home side.

On 21minutes Keith Graydon hit a poor clearance for the top corner, only for the seemingly goal-bound effort to strike the crossbar.

A succession of City corners produced a chance for Johnston which was blocked before Marc Eccles sent over a wicked left-wing cross on the half hour that eluded all and sundry in the box.

John Caffry was well positioned to field an Alex Benjamin effort on 37minutes before Jack Norton saved well from Johnston, the shot arriving at a good height for the keeper, but the save had to be made.

In the closing minutes of the first half the Lawyers had a shot cleared off the line and Stephen Hutt hit a post.

Norton dealt well with a Tommy English in-swinging corner before Stephen Harrison was fortunate to see his clearance bounce back off a City post.

The impressive Norton saved well from English before his opposite number misjudged the cross to present Benjamin with an easy tap-in goal.

The lead was held for barely three minutes before Ian Dixon headed an English corner back into the goalmouth where Steven Richardson headed past Norton.

On 68minutes Norton was the victor in a one-on-one with Richardson before Hutt brought down the same player in the box, Johnston making no mistake from the spot.

Shortly after Stewart Morris had replaced John Toft Graydon put English through on goal but the final shot cleared the bar before Norton again denied Richardson with his feet.

Andy Bowes and Calvin Smith replaced English and Graydon respectively as City held out for a workmanlike victory, their thirteenth consecutive win, a simple but ultimately effective use of counterattack at pace.

Rasher covered a lot of ground all over the pitch to earn my man of the match nomination, while Norton’s agility kept City’s advantage down to a single goal.
