Dunston Federation 0

You can only do your best and on Saturday City did just that; the team spirit and will to win were more than enough to brush aside the visitors and set City’s temporarily derailed season back on track.

The feel good factor could have started on 7minutes when a Steven Richardson knock-down gave Tommy English the ball which he dispatched with a thunderous drive only for the shot to test the crossbar’s rigidity; six minutes later Keith Graydon’s thirty yard free-kick fizzed low through the defensive wall, but Andrew Clark got a good early sight to smother the danger.

Dunston had three players booked in the opening forty minutes, but City refused to be bullied and stuck to their task.

Jimmy Farrell went close with a header from a Stephen Capper left-wing cross before the Dunston goal line survived a double assault, Clark clawing away a Farrell header from a Graydon corner and Stewart Morris having his rebound shot cleared by a defender off the line.

With five minutes remaining of the first period Steven Pickering fed Michael Dixon, but the latter sliced his shot wide of the post.

Still City pressed and in their eagerness needed too many passes at times when one touch might have reached the last defence.

After Richardson had gone close with a half-volley from an English drive into the box, Morris capped his industry down the flank with an opportunist goal when he chased a Farrell flick-on to lob Clark as he rushed to the edge of his box.

The beavering Richardson was denied a goal on 55minutes when he ended a great solo run with a shot which from just outside the box that curled wide of the far post.

Two minutes later Farrell got his just reward for a sterling back-to-goal performance when he lashed the ball into the net after successive City crosses had ping-ponged across the six-yard line.

John Mohan was called upon to make a routine save to deny Steven Preen on 69minutes before City made substitutions, the job done; Calvin Smith replaced the energetic Morris and Shaun Bell replaced the resurgent English.

However, it was City’s final substitute, debutant John Toft, who caught the eye in a five-minute cameo, his left-wing cross, delivered at pace, traversing an empty box and a crisp drive flashing wide of the far post, both chances the product of blistering pace.

Lewis Dodds’ dismissal on 87minutes put a bit of a dampener on proceedings, but he too can be proud of his contribution to a thoroughly enjoyable committed City victory – resounding to the motto of Everton FC.
