This year Father Christmas has obviously been looking at this thread and felt he needed to contribute, so he kindly gave me a book with many enlightening facts. It even tells us more about the infamous polar bear.
So heres a good one.

A certain Scottishman called William Paterson set up the Bank of England, by giving William 3rd a loan to support his war against France with an interest rate of 8%, and then went on to help set up the Bank of Scotland.

Not a lot of people know that!

So today's fact.

More calories are burned eating a stick of celery than the silly thing contains.
Proof that it is an awful and annoying vegetable that appears in foods that just don't need it!!

Other similar foods include lettuce( rabbit food that I'm in the process of learning to love but haven't yet got past faaaaaaaaaa(j)h(i)eetas and a Loch Fyne menu) and garlic( garlic rocks)

Winnie the Pooh's name came from a swan called Pooh(cruel owners,if i was the I would have refused to answer them) and a girl bear cub called Winnie short for Winnipeg.

Mushrooms can be also used for dyeing wool and other natural fibers. The chromophores of mushrooms are organic compounds and produce strong and vivid colors, and all colors of the spectrum can be achieved with mushroom dyes. Before the invention of synthetic dyes the mushrooms were the primary sources on dyeing textiles. This technique has survived in Finland, and many Middle Ages re-enactors have revived the skill again.

Some mushrooms have been used as fire starters (known as tinder fungi). Ötzi the Iceman was found carrying such mushrooms. Mushrooms, and other fungi, will likely play an increasingly important role in the development of effective biological remediation and filtration technologies.
