I'd suggest going straight to Cromford as Greyhound really isn't on the way (well it isn't for me anyway!) - please get there for 1.15pm at the latest

always better to have a scorer, especially a very good one who counts balls so we can see everyones strike rate (or non strike rate in some cases!)

before we go setting on a scorer we need to agree as a club that we need one and how we are going to pay for it planty. it is not just a decision for the captain unless david is doing it for free (which i doubt as i wouldnt) or if you are going to shell out the cash?

there are also further implications that if the 2nds have a paid scorer then its only fair the 3rds pay theirs as well.

at £10 a match that equates to over £400 a year where money can be better spent.

i agree its nice to have a scorer but there are better things to spend the money we are raising on.

just my opinion and its something we need to discuss first.

So does the 1st team scorer not get paid then

i can confirm that, yes the 1st team scorer does get paid. reason being the 1st team NEED a scorer every game or they loose points. the 1st team scorer also looks after all match balls, sorts bar out(when graham isnt there), changes numbers on score board(which he soon wont need to do), ring result in, fill sheets in and send them off, enters score-card on play cricket, oh, and he does the teas as well. he wud probably wipe sum folks A*** if they asked him to. all this is done to help 1st team match day run as smooth as poss 4 the players. hes happy to do all this and the players seam happy for him to do this. but im sure if folks start whinging and moaning about only the 1st team scorer getting paid hed be happy to do nothing!! he gets £10, hes there from approx 1.30 till bout 8pm, thats about 6.5 hours - do the maths, its not much per hour is it. like i say, if sum 1 else wants to do it, please forward ur name(s) on this posting.

2nd team doesnt need a scorer, so we dont need to spend £10 per game on one, as joe payne is happy to do the majority of it instead of umpiring(wen its his turn)and wen he is needed to bat sum one else does it.

3rd team r very lucky to have steve walkers mrs(sorry ive forgot her name) and john taylors mrs was also doing it yesterday as well, all for free, gratis, no charge!! as greenie says it will save the club approx £400 per season if 2nd and 3rd team do not pay 4 a scorer, which we r not ablidged to do, unlike the 1st team.

also 2day, thanks 2 julie and dave clarke, as apart from bob and clarky all todays team were under 16, which takes a lot of organising, so top effort. and a very well dun to todays team - agood win, with a 50 odd * for brad 46 for j lem and a 20 odd* for harry, more wikets for jim r as well.

well done lads!!!! was a bit worried when i saw the names down for this. not due to ability but age.

goes to show that my thoughts are correct the future of this club lies not with the achievements of the first 11 but that of the seconds and more so thirds and sunday side.

Ste - you forgot collects match fees, pay's umpires, sorts out travelling expences and take 1/2 time drinks out (and rolls andy ogden a fag at drinks...he he)

but you where also wrong its £12 now, had a rise this season, yes thats a 20% rise, you don't get that working for the council

I don't mind being general dogsbody but it would be nice some times if a few more people would be there on match days to help out, so its not just me up at the pavillion when we are fielding trying to score serve behind the bar and get drinks ready etc..., luckily of late my mother has been helping me with the teas so she has been serving behind the bar / getting drinks ready, but as i said it would be nice if a few more people where there to help (not including committee members as they are there as much as possible) possibly wives / partners???

Are scorers required? What is their role? Will they be paid? How much? Does the 1st X1 scorer attract a specific payment cos the games are 100 overs? What about the additional tasks that scorers appear to be burdened with (see previous postings)? Is the scorer to be voted in at the AGM? Is money better spent elsewhere?

Clarity required to stop the questions / debate.

Debate is healthy. Facts & questions are

1sts have to have a scorer as already stated or we lose 3 points a game. 1st Team scorer also makes teas (Yes he does Muriel has told me)
If we pay 2nd & 3rd team scorers it will cost over £440. On the basis that we may make £500 if the season goes as it should this will reduce to £60.(I know we are into season already)
If we pay scorers should this come out of the "profit" or do we increase subs or what do people want to do? Is this an AGM decision?

We were in the embarrassing situation last winter where we had no money. Things are looking better this year due to a lot of hard work on sponsorship, fundraising & good ideas(bonus ball, top4 bottom 4, & now alu cans BBQs at some events, bullying people away from the welfare quizes) although some club members have not taken part in any of these things (some for good reason. Others cos they can't be arsed)

I leave it to you mass debaters to think about it & then decide but beware of what you wish for.

On a personal level David indicated a desire to score and rightly or wrongly he received a favourable response. He was unable to get a lift to Cromford on Saturday. He was planning to get to Clay Cross this Saturday. I came on here today and found this thread.

There is no clarity at the moment, though judging by the "financials" I'll be informing David that his presence isn't required. If this is true, please can someone confirm as soon as possible so we can plan for the weekend. Cheers.

as a previous capt of 2nd team, i know how important it is to have the book looking gud, and junior steptoe, when he scored last year did a sound job, which was one less worry for me. however, i personally dont think we need david(or anybody else) to score from outside the team this year, as we have a couple of guys that wud rather score than umpire, they seem to do a gud job, so this in my opinion it saves the 2nd team £10. however if inuff club members feel strongly about this it may need to go to the agm. at the min we have a scorer, so to me its one less worry for the capt.

when David offered I accepted, he is an extremely competant scorer and it looks much better as a team to have a scorer - players cannot score when we are fielding

I was under the impression the seconds didn't have a scorer because no one wanted to do it, not as a cost cutting exercise

I thought we paid David (and others) to score last season and I feel that if someone gives up their time in a role such as scorer they should be reimbursed for it - we should never expect anyone to do it for nothing (this is also true in the thirds)

Every club I have been at has paid a scorer (when we had one) and it has been looked on as an important position (even when you don't need to have one!)

I personally think it is very short sighted to say if we don't need one, don't have one as it is another thing for the players to do and another thing for the players to potentially moan about doing (not that they do) it projects a much better image of our club if we have a proper scorer for every team and cuts down on things such as the annoying holloring of 'bowlers name' and also cuts down on mistakes with 2 scorers sitting together.

Maybe going forward some of the good fundraising we are doing could be used to pay scorers? Or at least give free games to spouses of scorers?

But as this has caused a bit of debate, it looks like we'll have to shelve the idea for now, Mr Nottingham, please can you thank David for his kind offer and please accept my apologies that I accepted the offer without consultation when I expected it to be a formality! If anything changes I will let you know.

No. Don't shelve it. Debate it some more. Only 2 comments since the debate started. Doesn't anyone else have an opinion.All I did was state some facts & raise some questions which is what was requested by our resident rag & bone man.
