Billingham U15s 40 West U15s 12 (17/10/10)

By Craig Chapman - October 19 2010
West went down by their heaviest defeat since they last played Billingham away at the start of the 2009/10 season. Where defence, the ability to move the ball through hand and support for the attacking player had been a strength over the last year it some how disappeared, allowing Billingham to run in 6 tries.
The start of the game was very misleading as West gained the first try from the kick off with a strong chase to win the ball. West started to attack Billingham’s line and when West were awarded a penalty from a high tackle a quick tap set up a ruck on Billingham’s line allowing Luke Chapman to pick up and drive his way over the line for an unconverted try 0 – 5.

Former West player Connor Hay was first to clock up a try for Billingham when the ball was chipped ahead Billingham managed to recover the ball quickly and spread it wide for Hay to gain the advantage of the overlap and score wide out 5 – 5.

From this point West’s nerves seemed to take over as they rushed their defence allowing space for Billingham to run in tries from their own half taking the score to 40 – 5 until late in the second half.

Despite the score line and frail defence the players maintained good discipline throughout the game and endeavoured to play good rugby throughout.

Captain Sam Miller had the last say of the game when he showed great alertness and courage to take on a quick penalty from stand in scrum half Kyle Jamison and force his way over the line, Connor Turner adding the conversion 40 - 12.
