Wells recorded their 12th win of the season when they completed a double over Bath side Old Sulians. Played in windy conditions both teams struggled to kick ensuring the game was played in an entertaining fashion.

Old Sulians 19 – Wells 22
The rival attraction of Scotland versus England may have kept a large number of potential spectators glued to the television inside the Old Sulians clubhouse, but most admitted afterwards they had made a mistake and wished that they had braved the wind and occasional flurries of rain to watch this highly entertaining game of rugby. Seeing that both clubs are in no danger of promotion, or relegation and were just playing for pride it was remarkable that they both put so much effort, commitment and passion into the match. This coupled with no little skill made for compulsive watching.
Wells welcomed back Jake White at outside half to partner Jake Knight, Aaron Cook moving to inside centre and these three natural ball players had a big influence on the game. In the pack, Wayne Stiling was absent, Rich Hickman moving up to the front row with Ferris Hall and Dom Veasey. Stephen Owen partnered Martin Phipps in the second row and behind them, Robbie Wiseman, Gavin Foster and captain Ben Knight formed a hard tackling, scavenging back row.
The wind always blows strongly at the Old Sulians ground and Wells had it in their backs for the first half, so a decent interval lead was a pre-requisite. Fifteen minutes gone, Alex Knight given some space made ground before passing to Jonny Allen, try plus a conversion, seven points up. Shortly after Mark Gregg appeared in mid-field. His long pass put Lewis O’Meara on his way to the second touchdown. It was the same player who got the third, again Mark Gregg on his right wing had made a lot of ground tying in defenders before the ball was released left. Wells just kept passing until the defence rang out of numbers. Seventeen points and looking good, but on the stroke of half time the home team got a try. A poor clearance kick put Wells under pressure and following a five metre scrum the number eight broke to touchdown. Seventeen five.
Ten minutes into the second half Sulians crept closer with a converted try, but then came the moment of the match. Jonny Allen in his own half with the ball sets off, a quick change of direction and five seconds later he touches down having gone past virtually every player on the pitch. The home side were not finished, a converted try five minutes from the end brought them within three points, but Wells held on for a deserved victory having outscored their opponents by four tries to three.
Back to the clubhouse for the last half an hour of Scotland and England. Not the hint of a try, still the Scots were not worried and by now, jubilant Welshmen were over the moon with their Triple Crown won earlier in the afternoon.
This weekend, the only game on Saturday is a third fifteen league fixture against Tor at the Portway ground. On SUNDAY 16 March, Wells play Winscombe in the Somerset Vase semi-final. The match kicks off at 2.30 at Tor’s Lowerside Park ground Glastonbury. It is hoped that a large band of supporters will make the short trip to cheer on their team.
