Members Information 15th April

By BR - April 15 2015

First this week, for those of you that did not attend, news from the AGM and the headlines are that we have a new Captain Peter Wylie who drove in on Saturday at noon into a strong wind. He started with two slightly left and then said that those people standing on the right should have a chance of getting one of the balls and promptly hit a drive up the right hand side to order. Now I have seen Peter play before and to be honest I’m quite familiar with, to put it kindly, the slightly left shot but I have neer seen him hit one right let alone on purpose so he must be a better player than I had given him credit for.

We also have a new Chairman with Bob Dixon stepping in to take over from Paul Brennan who has stepped down from the Committee after many years of service. We had 3 new and 1 returning Committee members confirmed at the AGM and they are Eleanor Allan, Nigel Lister and Neil Melrose with David Evans being the returning member.

Also at the AGM a resolution was passed to extend voting rights to all adult members playing at future General Meetings which means that 5 day, 6 day and Intermediate members can now vote on issues concerning their golf club.

We have had two incidents on the course this week that are of some concern both involving members hitting shots when greens staff are within range. First a ball landed on a green whilst it was being cut narrowly missing Geoff and then yesterday someone hit a ball that went through the cab window of the semi rough cutter although Ian had pulled the machine off the fairway into the trees because he thought it would be safer. Maybe next time if he wants to be really safe he should park in the middle of the fairway. However on a serious note please do not play your shot if there is anyone who maybe within range and please give way to the greens staff at all times.

Several members have asked me for a list of the courses in the Newcastle and District Golf Partnership where our members can play at a reduced fee. Until recently there were 12 clubs in the partnership but from April there are now 13 with the addition of Whitley Bay. The complete list is Alnmouth Bedlington, Blyth, City of Newcastle, Gosforth, Morpeth, Newcastle United, Northumberland, Ponteland, Tynemouth, Tyneside, Whitley Bay and of course Arcot. There is a list on the website here as well as in the changing rooms if you need to check.

In competition news the final qualifiers were decided for the Hardy Wilson bowl on Wednesday 8th April with 6 from that day going through to the matchplay stages to join the 10 that qualified on Saturday 4th April. The leading qualifer on the 8th was Darren Jordan with a nett 68 with Andrew Ross second with a nett 69 and Sandy Allan a shot further back in third. The draw is on the notice board in the gents changing room and as ever with the matchplay events please play your matches as soon as possible.

The sweep on Saturday saw the top 3 players all return scores of 40 points with Rob Anderson, finishing ahead of Alan Johnson and Simon Lunn on the back 9.

The Victory Cup on Sunday became our first casualty of the weather this season with heavy rain acusing the competition to be abandoned. It will be replayed later in the season and all entry monies will be credited to future events. The money collected for the Masters sweep will however be repaid so if you entered that then please collect your £1 from the shop next time you are in.

Please note that starting next Tuesday 21st April the competition start sheet will be posted on Tuesdays at 5.30pm instead of Wednesdays.

Finally a reminder of some social events fast approaching. This Friday the Race Night will take place and there is a menu on the door next to the bar for the social event on Saturday 2nd May so if you would like to attend please enter your name and food choices as soon as possible.

Kind Regards

Brian Rumney
