Members Newsletter Members Newsletter for 8th July 2014 ...

First this week a plea from a fellow golfer. Whilst playing the 9th hole on Sunday 29th June Alan Ruddock missed the green (hardly surprising I know but hear me out), left his bag and took his wedge and his putter to the green. After chipping on to about 10 feet he holed the putt and in his exitement left without picking up his pitching wedge. If anyone has picked it up and forgotten to hand it in please return it to the shop as soon as possible as Alan misses a lot of greens so is lost without it.

Also I was contacted by a member following my email last week who said that my references to slow play could be seen as a green light for members to confront those on the course they suspected of being slow players. This is certainly not the case. The correct procedure would be to report the matter to the Committee and let them deal with any issues that may arise and not to start ranting at people on the golf course.

The qualifying round for the Club Championship that was postponed again last weekend will now be held on Saturday 19th July. The quarter finals will be held on Tuesday 22nd July with the semi final and final being played on Sunday 27th July. The Mixed Open due to take place on 27th has been cancelled due to lack of entries.

Start sheets for Saturday Competitions will look a little different from next weekend. In order to comply with equality legislation the Committee have decided that 2 tee times every Saturday morning at 11.04 and 11.12 will be made available for 7 day Lady members who wish to play on a Saturday. These tee times can be booked through the shop and can only be reserved by, and are for the exclusive use of, 7 day Lady members. If these times are not reserved by 8.30 the day before the Competition they will become free to be booked by men wishing to play in Competition. Some men will argue that if this is the case then they wish to play in the middle of Ladies Competitions. The difference is that although men can still play at other times on a Friday outside of the Ladies times 7 day Lady members cannot play on Saturdays during the season until after 4.30 usually even though they are paying the same fees as the men so we hope that this will resolve the issue.

Last Wednesday saw Mark Wilson win the midweek stableford with a total of 40 points. Second was Scott Taylor on 38 who beat Steve Lord also on 38 on a countback. Happiest man of the day however was Jim Clough who due to having the only 2 recorded on the day won £51!

Although we were not able to play the Club Championship qualifier this Saturday due to heavy overnight rain we did get the course open at 10.00 and held a Stableford. Winner was Gary Foster with 38 points on a countback from Steven Ashley with Allan Johnson on 37 points in third place. Gary and Steven qualify to play together in the final of the Mill Volvo Masters later on in the season so well done to both.

Sunday saw another Stableford this time won by Scott Mallen on 39 points on a countback again from Dave Patten with Steven Ashley again on 38 points (lesson must be working Steesh). Also the Arcot Salvers Mixed Foursomes Competition was won by Gary and Lorinda Russell with a nett 68 by one shot from John and Hazel Palfreyman. All I can say is Lorinda must be some player because Gary only had 28 points last Wednesday by himself.

As you may have seen by the number of names on the notice board we have a group of new members joining us from Wallsend Golf Club. I would like to take the opportunity to welcome them to the golf club and hope they enjoy the course and facilities for many years to come.

Just a reminder that the Captain’s Outing to Eaglescliffe Golf Club is scheduled for Wednesday 20th August. The Captain would ask anyone wishing to play to please enter their names on the sheet in the Men’s locker room as soon as possible.

Kind Regards

Brian Rumney
