Some fantastic news in todays email including the fact that we finally managed tp play and complete a couple of Competitions this weeked.

The Bowmer Trophy on Saturday was won by Kevin Stamp with a remarkable score of 45 points from Richard Moller on 42 points and Don McGruther third on 40 points. I’ve heard quite a few people complaining that Kevin is a bit useful off 19 handicap and now I can see what they mean although he will find things a little more tricky off 16.

There was a time when a score of 45 points would have resulted in a further handicap reduction under what became known as “Rule 19” or as it appears in the Hnadicap book General Play. However because not all Clubs were applying this rule in the same way CONGU (the body that governs the handicaping system) changed the system last year and advised Clubs not to cut players handicaps more than the normal amount for one “Extraordinary Score” but wait to see if another happened in future events.

For the purposes of the system an Extraordinary Score is defined as one that is 4 or more shots under standard scratch and if another Extraordinary Score did happen within a certain number of events then depending on how low the scores were and the length of time between them the computer would recommend an extra reduction as happened to Gary Foster earlier this year.

Therefore Kevin is still off 16 but if he has another similar score in future weeks he could get down near single figures!

Sunday was a more tame affair with the Presidents Bowl being won by Michael Stenhouse with 39 points by one shot from Phill Howett with Jonny Lynn 1 shot further back in third.

However the big news in golf this weekend was not the runaway victory for Martin Kaymer in the US Open (Gav Foster wants me to tell everyone he had money on him @ 25/1) but that Arcot Hall Junior Team made up of Josh Brookes, Issac Connelly, Lewis Crane and Andrew Strachan won the best nett prize in the Northumberland County Junior Strokeplay Championship at Gosforth Golf Club with Andrew also winning the individual best nett prize with an outstanding score of 63.

Huge congratulations to all of them and also to Michael Crane and Paul Scott who are now in charge of the Junior Section. As County Champions they will go on to represent Northumberland at the National Finals at Woodall Spa on th 9th and 10th of August. Well done again to all concerned.

Bad news is that England lost to Italy last Saturday night. Also on the bad news front is that with only 9 pairs having put their names down for the competition we had planned for this Thursday before England’s next match we will have to change the format. Those 18 players who have put thier names down please still turn up just before 3pm and we will play an event amongst ourselves but there will no longer be the need for a shotgun start. As a result the course will be open as normal on Thursday apart from between 10.00 and 10.45 for a visiting party and between 15.00 and 15.40 for those of us wishing to play golf before watching the football.

Finally it is Dan’s last day this Friday. He is at work on Thursday and Friday this week so anyone wishing to say goodbye will need to pop in then. I would like to thank Dan for his efforts since September 2012 when we took over the shop and also for the time he worked at the Club for Carl. I’m sure you will join me in wishing him all the very best for the future.

Kind Regards

Brian Rumney
