Wells 30 – Avon 0
Back in the balmy days of September 2007, Wells started their league season at Gordano. Having only just staved off relegation the previous term consolidation was the target and how well they have consolidated. At one time early on, promotion looked a possibility, but following last Saturday’s win over Avon, third place was achieved and with the bulk of the side still under twenty five who knows what next season will bring.
A fortnight ago, Wells played Avon in the final of the Somerset Blackthorn Vase and in fine dry, sunny conditions, scored fifty eight points. This time it was cold, wet and windy, but they still managed a solid thirty points to nil, without ever looking their best. Two penalty goals in the first twenty minutes put Wells on their way and then a wild pass was picked up by Jonny Allen who made good ground before handing onto Jake White, a shimmy and a dummy saw him across the line. Aaron Cook added the two points. Some ten minutes later Lewis O’Meara who seems to have played in virtually every match kept up his impressive try scoring record with his thirty first touch down of the season. It was then the turn of another speed merchant, Jonny Allen to get his name on the score sheet, Aaron Cook adding the two points. Half time, twenty five to nil for Wells and game over.
Four minutes into the second half, Alex Knight was put into space following a quickly taken penalty. Although he had a fair distance to go, there was little doubt that he would score. Was this to be floodgate time, no, Avon rallied and on territory and possession probably edged the remainder of the match. Still the Wells defence is pretty mean these days and indeed it is a matter of pride not concede tries. As the game went on, on came the subs, notably young Chris Slade on the wing who once, or twice showed what a dangerous runner he can be. The defence held, occasional sorties into the opposition half relieved the pressure and a very successful league season came to an end.
The Wells club would like to thank lunch sponsor, Ryan Symes of Wells Hire Centre for his generous contribution as well as the Macmillan Cancer Care ladies who prepared and served a magnificent meal to eighty one members and guests. In return the club raised over £1500 for the charity, which will all be used in the Wells area helping cancer patients with their needs. Finally Wells rugby club would like to thank the league sponsors, the Tribute Brewery of St Austell for supplying the, man of the match awards, which went to Jake Knight from the first team and Joe Phelps from the thirds.
