Somerton 0 Wells 29
Wells second team notched up a third victory of the season on Saturday in an unconvincing performance against bottom side Somerton.
Often when relegation contenders meet the nature of the performance is irrelevant with victory the number one priority. Wells however would have hoped for a more convincing victory in this game as they laboured to victory in this flat encounter.
Travelling with a strong team Wells would have been forgiven in thinking that victory was to be a formality against a struggling Somerton, a strong home team pack however ensured that victory was not to be so forthcoming early on with some powerful rucking that overwhelmed the Wells forwards.
Wells began brightly with an early try through Martin Gibbs, after this however they failed to put any form of pressure on Somerton and spent much of the first half doing very little but producing frustrating handling errors in the midfield. The one positive from the first half was the effective set piece at both scrum and line out, with the pack outclassing their opponents in this area.
Wells put the game out of reach within the first 10 minutes of the second half and victory was assured if not terribly convincingly. It is easy to forget however after such a poor performance that the game was won, which will no doubt be a relief to everyone involved in the Wells 2nd team. Victory now against Ivel Barbarians will surely secure safety for next season.
A relieved Wells 2nd team manger David Butler commented after the game that... ‘winning isn’t always pretty but at the end of the season its the league table that will decide how good a team actually are‘.
