WELLS RFC U/16’s 7 (0)
KEYNSHAM U/16’S 0 (0)

Wells first fixture of the New year, and the 3rd time of trying to play this First round tie against Keynsham. This was always going to be a difficult tie against a formidable side that Wells hadn’t beaten for 5 seasons. The City side rose to the challenge and competed at every department; the line out was always going to be crucial, and Tom Payne won 75% of line outs thrown, combined with a sizable Wells pack securing the set piece, the City side enjoyed good quality ball to work off. Keynsham showed their ability to turn over ball on the floor, an area where Wells are still learning to compete, and were able to secure ball to let their lively backs work off. In a very evenly contested first half, Keynsham spent long periods of play inside the Wells half, but numerous breaks from defence saw Wells posing a threat every time with ball in hand and using the width of the pitch. The Wells Backs were formidable in both attack and secure in defence, with the tackling of Will Dyer, the handling of David Wheatley and covering play from Man of the Match Isaac Whitcombe.
The tie swung in the City side’s favour after 45 minutes when after surging drives from the Wells pack, Tom Payne slipped away from the rear of the drive stepped through 4 Keynsham players, and showed his pace from twenty two metres out, stopped by a high tackle 2 metres from the line but he sheer strength powered over to score a memorable try. With Joe Watson adding the conversion under the posts Wells led 7 – 0. Keynsham came back very strongly, but the Wells defence was secure, the covering tackles and support play from the whole team was inspiring. A sizeable and vocal support from the touch line from the Wells faithful enjoyed the final stages of the game; as Wells managed to see out and close down a well deserved victory. The quarter Finals of the Somerset Cup have seen Wells drawn at Home against Frome.
