Thornbury U19- 41 Wells U19- 24
Wells colts got back league action with a trip to Thornbury, with a depleted squad due to injuries and other commitments. Wells acquitted themselves very well against an unbeaten Thornbury side, who are also in the fourth round of the national colts cup. With a squad consisting mainly of forwards the backs line knew it was going to be a testing afternoon, this was proved to be the case.
In the first Ten minutes Thornbury raced into a fourteen point lead with two converted tries, Wells then knuckled down and began to dominate with some excellent forward play led by Lewis Birch and Lewis Cohen closely supported by Callum Simpson. Alas Thornbury slipped through again to score another try followed by a penalty.
Then came the wells reply, a typical powerful run from James Sturgess which resulted in a well worked converted try. Not long after that wells found themselves the Thornbury half again, Andrew Whittaker of Canada burrowed his way to the try line to score a well deserved try.
The second half started 24- 14 with the elements in Wells’ favour, but again conceded an early try. Then another came after a charged down kick let Thornbury in under the posts. The forwards, not happy with this decided to keep the ball tight with Birch and Sturgess dominating, well supported by Dunford. This led to two further tries from Sturgess and Cohen earning Wells a four try bonus point.
Final score 41-24, a fair result, if not a little flattering to the home side. Well done to all players for gutsy performance in terrible conditions. MOM: Lewis Birch. Next week home to Hornets, (league game). Kick off 2 o’clock.
