Wells travelled to local rivals Chew Valley for the 1st round of the Bristol Combination Plate competition. In near perfect conditions, Tom White’s Wells, won the toss and played in to the wind and dominated early exchanges; the solid pack, with the addition of Joe Killen secured each breakdown and were at times guilty of throwing too many players in to a secure rucks with no players to run 2nd phase ball. Chew always looked to kick themselves out of danger to great effect, and the warning signs were evident. Against the run of play, Wells were guilty of straying offside and in the 26th minute Chew capitalised to go ahead 3 – 0. This score remained till the break even though Wells pushed hard to level.

The second half started with a poor kick off from Wells, they elected not to play the ball and Chew capitalised, driving hard for the line, the City sides indiscipline was exposed and the resulting penalty saw Chew stretch to their lead to 6 – 0. The City sides “Never say die attitude” was evident for all to see, and were unlucky not to score when Harry Davies scampered through a ruck to touch down, the referee on the open side of the ruck adjudged the ball to have been knocked forward. From the resulting scrum Wells again pushed for the line, and Finlay Callender-Wood scored in the opposite corner, again to be denied. Wells composed themselves and after a series of pick and drive yardage gains, instumented by George Dally, Tom Payne and Tom Galpin Wells found the space for Joe Killen to score close to the posts after 65 minutes; with the conversion added by Joe Watson the City side took the lead 6 – 7 with 5 minutes remaining. Wells tried to close the game out, but were pushed back on their 22, where in the 70th minutes were adjudged offside and were made to pay for this costly error and Chew secured the win with the last kick of the game.

The City side can look back at this game as a sharp learning curve, they must adapt to the referee’s whistle from the kick off instead of waiting 20 minutes in the game. Their discipline although controlled, was exposed in 3 isolated incidents that proved 3 too many. Wells controlled the game from start to finish, enjoyed 60 minutes of possession and played some awesome rugby, but came out of this fixture the looser. They must learn to convert possession in to points, and the ability to close down games when all the hard work had been done to secure victory
