WELLS RUGBY3RDS                     29   (5)

In warm bright conditions Wells RFC 3rd fifteen continued their new venture within the confines of the Somerset Southern 3rd League. The City side managed to travel away with the unusual luxury of a full complement of players and 3 replacements.

For more than 25 minutes the City side played a controlled game, taking time to settle against a sizable Wellington pack; set piece play was a problem, but the light weight Wells pack were quicker and aggressive at the breakdown, special mention to Alex King Karvell, Mike Brown and Shaun Eaton who scavenging play unsettled the home side. Wells deservedly took the lead after 35 minutes after passages play should have seen Wells with a sizeable lead, at times opting to kick for the corners instead of taking the 3 points on offer. Eaton scoring after switching direction to great effect, and Wells held the slender lead to half time.

Wellington enjoying 8 replacements, changed the pack to gain mobility, but lost its lion share of the set pieces, but in open play were effective, and shortly after the break scored a converted try after a series of drives. Wells took time to reaffirm themselves and Wellington scored another converted try to lead 14 – 5 after 50 minutes. Wells then turned the game around, winning set piece and continuing their lineout domination, possession took its toll. Wells pushed back to their 22, elected to run out of defence and with Joe Phelps starting the offensive, Kane Truckles 80 metre sprint to score under the posts. Sam Hartley added the conversion, and the City side started to dominate. Quick tries followed by Shaun Eaton, Mike Brown and Ted Rowe completed the game with Sam Hartley adding another conversion; the City side ran away with the fixture, but credit to Wellington who battled hard and managed a score in the final minute. A complete squad performance, Wells can take great heart from this result and look forward to a home fixture against Wiveliscombe 2nds at Charter Way on the 29th September.
