Official Wells RFC
Wells Rugby Football Club is one of the oldest in Somerset, having been inaugurated in 1876. Since then it has a chequered history, including name changes, various grounds and even having been disbanded altogether. Records also show that it has had a number of England Internationals, with Alec Lewis being the only one still living. Although he is no longer able to visit as he moved to South Africa in 2004. However, his England tie, blazer badge and photograph still adorn the clubhouse.

The club currently play their home matches at their Portway Ground next to the Wells Leisure Centre. Here they have two pitches, including floodlights for training, plus a large clubhouse. The club are lucky enough to own the pitches and the clubhouse and are very fortunate in having the use of a further large playing area just five minutes, or so, walk away. This contains a full size pitch plus various junior and mini playing pitches.

At present Wells RFC run three senior sides, the first team currently playing in Division One of the Somerset League. The Second XV play all friendly matches and their successful makeup is a mixture of experience and youth giving a good grounding in senior rugby for the ever increasing number of players progressing through the junior sides. The Third team again is a mixture of very experienced players and youth.

The junior section of the club is particularly strong and run teams from under seven to under seventeen. Over the years a number of players have started in the mini section and gone all the way up to the first XV. One is currently in the American Eagles under 19 training squad. The junior and mini teams all have their dedicated coaches, many of whom have qualified under the RFU Coaching Awards scheme. They also have a band of helpers who organize the social side of the game plus the event to which all the juniors and minis look forward to, the annual tours. These can be anywhere in the U.K., but six years ago, Ireland came onto the map and now France has been added as well.

In the present day, no club can sit back and be content with itself. Wells is no exception. On the playing side it is hoped that in the next season, or two, the playing strength will be sufficient to allow the club to push for promotion to the Somerset Premier Division and remain there. In recent years Wells have twice been promoted to a higher division and twice come straight down. The committee are also working on improving the facilities for members. A large screen television has been installed which is proving to be a great success, but it is the fabric of the club which is been targeted. New changing rooms with their own individual showers is phase one. A larger area for club dinners and functions will then be available. Further plans to improve the facilities are in the planning stage and these will be implemented as soon as possible.

Very few clubs can operate by sustaining just one seasonal sport. Here at Wells we are lucky that the club supports a number of winter and summer skittles team, the changing rooms and the bar are used throughout the year by the Wells City Harriers, Wells Acorns Ladies Hockey Club use the clubhouse following their home matches and the Wells Sea Angling Club hold their regular meetings at the club. Other regular users include The Globe Carnival Club and Kumon Maths and English Classes are held twice weekly.
