Beverley 24 Scunthorpe 5
With the Beverley pitches waterlogged, Driffield kindly allowed this fixture to go ahead at their ground where the conditions were nearly perfect. From the kick off the Scunthorpe side showed their intent on keeping the ball close to their strong set of forwards and throughout the game never let the ball past their centres. However with the Beverley pack winning the majority of line-out ball and being quicker and more aggressive at the breakdown, the Beverley backs made good ground against the opposition and everytime the ball went wide looked dangerous. Following good work by the forwards a scrum in the Scunthorpe 22 gave quick second phase ball which was spun out to Worrall on the wing who went over in the corner. The strong Scunthorpe forwards kept the away side in the game as they constantly tried to slow the ball down and kill the ball at the breakdown, giving away many penalties in the process. Close to half time Beverley strung together some good phases and the ball was swept from one side of the pitch to the other where centre Luca Mander broke a tackle and sprinted 30 metres to go under the posts. At the start of the second half Beverley scored almost immediately to kill the game as centre Andy Hazell broke through three tackles and round the full back to score under the posts. The second half became mor and more scrappy but a good move in the backs saw Mander break through the gap to go under the posts for his second try. Towards the end as the game threatened to spill out of control Scunthorpe scored a consolation try after their only pressure of the game.
