BRIDLINGTON COLTS 5 BEVERLEY COLTS 26.
Beverley Colts maintained their 100% record this season and in doing so avenged last season’s sole defeat away at Bridlington in the process. Bridlington is always a tough fixture away, no matter what level grade Beverley is playing, but the Colts started unphased at this, stringing together numerous phases, line breaks and fantastic support play culminating in a fine try to Pete Johnson, who came on a beautiful line off his blindside wing to open the scoring with a try under the posts. Fullback Jamie Gill slotting the simple conversion for a 7-0 lead.
Beverley immediately maintained momentum, obviously with last season’s blemish at the forefront of their minds. James Graham with the break this time after a fine interchange with Phil DuBoulay; a despairing Bridlington tackle held the center up just short of the try line, but quick ball followed leading to an easy score for number 8 Dave Brant, Gill slotting a fantastic conversion from the sideline to put the Beavers 14-0 up.
It looked like it was going to be a prosperous night from there on in, but a mixture of courageous defending from the home side and a referee intent on blowing his whistle at any given opportunity, turned an open affair into a stop- start scrappy one. The only notable features for the rest of the half was the organization and effectiveness of the Beverley defence and Brant rumbling over for his second try, again converted by Gill. The defending was especially pleasing as it was causing Bridlington all sorts of problems, bone shattering tackles coming from lock Eddie Russell, Graham, hooker Tom Doyle, and the impressive Chris Brant , playing out of position at inside center.
Bridlington threatened a fight back at the start of the second half, as through a succession of penalties, they scored from a rolling maul in the corner. This together with yellow cards to Andy James and Graham look to breathe a life line into the ‘Brid’ effort; but through the twenty minutes with 14 men the Beverley defence continued with the high standard they had set themselves in the first stanza. In fact they remained the dominant side. Once returned to the full quota, the young Beavers put any issues beyond doubt with a deserved try to the ‘pocket dynamo’ Doyle after some sublime support play where it seemed nearly the whole team had at least touched it once.
There were some fine performances in what, despite winning by twenty one points, most found a frustrating game to be involved in. Prop James Baker and flanker Christy Hill, both recent recruits from Bishop Burton College had excellent games, Doyle and flanker Dale Hodgson were tireless workers, and DuBoulay and Dave Brant are adopting superbly to their leadership roles, but man of the match went to Eddie Russell who seems to be getting better with each game. It is exciting the potential these young men are beginning to show and to win by such a margin and not be entirely happy with their performance is testament to this.
