Huddersfield 2nds 3 Beverley
2nds 10
This was a tough game for the second team, particularly as they made the long
journey to Huddersfield with only 14 players! Having again set of late with a
team of 16 it wasn't until the M62 they found out in fact a further 2 players
were unavailable, however, determined to start winning games in this division
the team soldiered on. On arrival you would have been forgiven for thinking it
was a trip to far, Huddersfield were already out in their matching training kits
doing warm up drills and looking sharp, Beverley got to the changing rooms to
establish what sort of team could be put out.
Young Dale Hodgeson stepped up and volunteered for scrum half and the pack
played one down. What had promised to be a tough battle upfront ensued as the
forwards locked horns time and again, but it was the scrummage where Beverley
were able to take control, and dominate a large home pack. Time and again prop
Dave Brant forced his opposite into reverse gear giving the home fly half little
chance of receiving clean ball. The whole pack put in a brave performance, out
numbered and out sized, giving Du Bouley the chance to regularly clear lines
whenever required.
Despite the shortage of numbers Beverley attempted to play a wide game,
wherever possible utilizing the power of Wilkes and Gardiner in the centers. Had
a fine break by Wilkes been better dealt with at the breakdown then Beverley
would surely have scored in the corner, as it was half time arrived with the
score at 3:3. After half time what developed was a cagey and tight forward
battle with Beverley continuing to dominate in the scrums, and Huddersfield
competing well elsewhere.
Smith and Graham were secure under the high ball, with Shaw and Breslin a
constant nuisance in the loose. A fast breakout from his own 22 saw Graham haled
down about 15 yards out, resulting a in a scrum to the home side. Tight head
Woods and hooker Todd were able to disrupt the home scrum and quick ball fed to
Gardiner resulted in a well deserved try to Beverley, Du Bouley with the
conversion. Second rowers Thorne and Barber continued to push hard in the scrum
as the game wore on, with sound defense the order of the day as the home team
looked to level. In the end it was a fine team effort from the whole side that
earned their second win in this tough league. Thanks to Spenner who despite
injury played for the side.
Next game is away at Scunthorpe.
