BEVERLEY COLTS 18 GOOLE COLTS 8

Beverley colts opened up their defence of the East Riding Floodlit Championship with a hard fought win away at Goole in testing conditions last night. Persistent showers through the entire match made a difficult away fixture even harder and when Beverley began the game trying to play the ‘running’ game they enjoy so much; the inevitable handling errors ensued , struggling to get out of their own half for most of the 1st period. On one rare attacking foray, the impressive Goole fullback intercepted and was set to run the length but amazingly Tom Doyle , in a man of the match performance from hooker, hauled him down from behind to save a certain score. Goole continue to live off Beverley mistakes and it wasn’t long before their winger touched down in the corner after Beverley had again failed to clear their lines. Goole 5 Beverley 0.
This seem to waken Beverley up and after fine breaks from James Graham and Chris Brant, they were finally rewarded with a touchdown by winger Adam Hugill after quick hands from Phil DuBoulay and Jamie Gill. Gill missed a difficult conversion from the touchline. Half time Goole 5 Beverley 5.
After some stern words during the break from their coach, Beverley started to implement their wet weather game plan much more effectively in the second half; the forwards providing a platform with new recruit from Bishop Burton , Adie Sheehan , Doyle and Dale Hodgson all shining. Du Boulay , out of position at scrum half and Gill at stand off using the ball much more intellengently and the majority of the game was played deep inside Goole territory.
The Goole defence was holding firm though and against the run of ply they kicked a dubious penalty to snatch the lead 8-5. Beverley didn’t panic though, and Gill struck a fine penalty to level the scores at 8-8, and from the next play hoisted a magnificent ‘up and under’ which caused havoc in the Goole defence and was pounced on by Graham for a decisive try. Gill slotted the simple conversion to make it 15-8 to Beverley.
Gill completed a fine second half by slotting another penalty to open the crucial ‘two score’ lead at 18-8. Goole fought back in the last ten minutes but couldn’t breach Beverley’s resolute defence even though Beverley lost stocky center Jamie Hancock to a red card for a skirmish which was probably the only incident in a game which was generally played in a fine spirit despite the adverse conditions.

:-! Is there a list of fixtures for the colts this season? If so can they be published cos I am sure that there are a lot of people who would like to see them play. I understand that they are very strong this year which hopefully bodes well for the future of the club.
