HYTHE SUN XI vs HAMMOND WALLEYS
Sunday 21st May
Tinky Tames The Walleys
Rob JAMES 54*
Rob James found some form to score 54* and spare Hythe's blushes against the Hammond Walleys on Sunday. With several players missing the Walleys put up a spirited performance to give the Sunday XI a good game as always. Hythe were all out for 159 and Walleys recovered from 75 for 8 to 133 for 8 before they were eventually all out for 134.
Hythe lost the toss and were invited to bat first. Hythe had Samm Downing making his home debut and Jimmy Wilden playing his first game since 1996. James Page and Zac Millar opened for Hythe and a good opening stand was expected but the vice Captain didn't deliver and Zac was out caught & bowled for 8. Next ball Jack Knight-Owen was heading back where he came from judged LBW to Parys for 0. Hythe 9-2.
Was Guru going to be Hythe's saviour - NOPE as he fell caught off Cartwright for 10. Saunders promoted himself to 5 and he and Page added 34 for the 4th wicket before Hammond had Saunders caught in the 14th over for 16. Page was next to go for a solid 34 which included 3x4's and a six. Hythe 93-5 off 18. drinks Hythe had moved onto 102 for 5 after Jimmy Wilden battered his first ball in 16 years to the boundary for 4. He did it again but was out shortly afterwards for 9. Sam Mead was then caught & bowled off the 7th ball of the over to leave Hythe wobbling at 116 for 7. Parys returned to dismiss Downing 0 and Blackwell 4 - 117-9 and Mrs Mead was jamming scones faster than ever.
Kev McCarthy joined Robbie James though and the pair added 42 in 8 overs including James bringing up his fifty - well appreciated by the Walleys. Finally at 159 in the 35th over McCarthy was bowled by Cartwright for 9. James ending on 54*.
After a lovely tea from the Mead / Millar partnership - Hythe took to the field. You'd have thought the colonal would have rested himself after his 6 for on Saturday but no - Sundays bowling awards at stake. 4 overs in though it was Super Kev who took the first wicket - bowling Parys for 3. By the 10th over Walleys had lost two more wickets, both to McCarthy - a stunning reflex catch by Downing and another bowled by Kev. Walleys 20-3.
With star guest Jonjo Stovell at the crease who would get the prize wicket. 100-1 odds if you had him Jimmy Wilden thanks to a good catch by Rob James for 5. Kelly & Beckett added 30 for the 5th wicket before Beckett was bowled by Blackwell for 22 which included 2x4's & 2x6's. Three more wickets fell in the seveties Sam Mead getting two of them. Walleys 75 for 8 in only the 23rd over. Dusted down and changed the first half umpire put on his white's to replace Giorgio and took the game to the Hythe bowlers. McCarthy's 3-5 after 5 overs converted to 22 off 7 and Sam Meads final 2 overs went for 16. But after scoring 30 Norris went for one big hit too many and was stumped by Jack Knight-Owen off McCarthy. Walleys 134 all out - Hythe win by 25 runs.
Well done to the Walley's for making it a pleasurable game as always and to the Hythe lads for making it 3 wins in 3 even without several key Sunday lads..
