Powell Back In The Groove With 5-17 To Seal Another 2's Win

Lee POWELL 5-17
Hythe and Dibden Second XI continued their winning run with a comfortable seven wicket victory over basement club Ellingham. A five-wicket haul from Lee Powell helped to bowl the visitors out for just 80 while a 41 from Hythe skipper Mike Bowman saw the Green Caps over the line.
After the demolition of Suttoners last week Hythe were on a high. However, with Sean Tongs and Wayne Effeny absent the visit of Ellingham could have proven tricky, especially after the toss was lost on a scorching Saturday afternoon at Jones’ Lane.
Ellingham chose to bat but quickly put themselves under pressure. Having survived a dropped chance off Russell Moore on only the second ball of the match, the visitors opening batsmen then contrived to run himself out later in the over when the ball was hit straight to Ewan Bell.
The second wicket fell shortly after as Gary Howe caught a high top edge of Moore to leave Ellingham 5-2. The visitors recovered after that with a 51 run partnership but shot themselves in the foot soon after with three poor dismissals.
Lee Powell picked up two wickets when a fine leg glance was caught by Howe before a short ball was pulled away to the leg side boundary only to find Mike Edwards under the trees at fine leg. Ian White also struck after being hit for a couple of sixes when Ewan Bell took an extraordinary catch at long-on.
White picked up two more wickets soon after as the visitors crumbled but it was Powell who would steal the show. In an excellent spell of away swing he picked up two more wickets caught behind by Howe – who took four catches in the game, before his final victim was clean bowled by an in-swinger to close the innings on a paltry 80 runs.
Powell finishing with 6-0-17-5 as Ellingham lost their final eight wickets for just 24 runs.
In reply, the result was always a formality but work had to be done to keep wickets intact. Captain Mike Bowman opened with Matt Young because of Sean Tongs’ absence and he showed great comfort at the crease.
Without a great deal of difficulty the pair set a useful platform for the team to build on with an opening partnership of 48 before Young was dismissed for seven.
Luke Mills joined Bowman in the middle and they took the Green Caps to the verge of victory before unfortunately both were dismissed, costing the hosts a point. First Bowman was bowled for 41 before Mills was caught for 17. In the end Richard Last hit a four to seal the win and yet another victory for the Second XI.
