HYTHE XI vs St.ANDREWS CHURCH

Friday 26th June

Porter Stars But Hythe Made To Work For Win

Tom PORTER 79

Inc 7x4's 5x6's

Played on the Artificial after overnight rain Hythe's annual fixture with St.Andrews Church turned into a close encounter with the green caps winning by 6 runs. Tom Porter (a late call up for Tom Richards) starred for Hythe with 79 including 7x4's and 5x6's. For St.Andrews Hythe Under 11 Coach J.P Fenton took an impressive 5-25 and Ian McGill (who we hope will play for hythe next year) 43*.

Hythe batted first on a pleasant evening though the square still showed signs of damp from the previous 24 hours rain. Hythe opened with Harry Smith and Greg Woods who were up against Under 13's Sam Long's dad and JP.Fenton.9 came off the first over but JP got the nreakthrough in the second over having Smith caught behind for 9. That borught Matt Young to the crease but in JP's next over Hythe were 17 for 2 with Woods caught for 1.

Tom Huxley and Matt Young added 17 in just 3 overs when Young was cruely given out by Chiv L.B.W to Fenton for 12 (sorry Matt). For someeone who drives to work when he only lives 100 metres from the school the old pe teacher wasn't doing a bad job.

That brought Tom Porter to the crease and the Hythe innings burst into life. Huxley hit a four before run out for 12 but Porter showed no mercy on Gareth Meads bowlers as he hit a swashbuckling 79 including 7x4's & 5x6's. JP returned at the end to snap up Hythe skipper Sean Tongs for 12 and then Tom Porter. With a few overs to go young Kieran Chalmers smashed 2 sixes in a quick fire 21* and Hythe finished on 165 for 7.

St.Andrews opened with Woolaway and Under 17's batsman Sam Mead. Hythe put on the dads to bowl in Pete Smith and Dave Huxley. Smiths first over went for 12 but Huxley drew first blood when he had Mead caught by Harry Smith for 1. Next over and Pete Smith got his first wicket bowling P.Long (6).When P.Smith was third out bowled by Julian Chalmers for 2 it looked game over. Gareth Mead had opther ideas as he smasehd JC for a four and a six in consecutive balls, much to the pleasure of the bowlers son cookie.

49 for 3 off 6 and the church were putting up a fight. Next over however Pete Smith bowled Gareth Mead for 14 to finish his spell of 4 overs 2-26. That brought in Mr.Cool - Bramshaw 2nd XI skipper Ian McGill who took his time picking up the bad balls.Woolaway finally went for a very good 26 inc 4x4's as the Church tried to up the pace. Ben Long hung in well for 8 before he was out bowled by the impressive Kieran Chalmers. Ian was thew joined by his son with the church needing 50+ off 4 overs. Ian smashed 17 off Tom Huxleys 2 overs then 21 off Dave Huxley to set up a grandstand finish. Tongsy brought on Tom Porter to bowl the final over who bowled 3 wides but with Ian stranded for most of it at the wrong end St.Andrews were left needing 7 off 2 balls. Porter bowled another wide but as Chiv turned round to signal young McGill reached out and hit it into the gloves of Tongsy - out for 16. Josh Mead saw out the final ball and Hythe had won by 6 runs. Ian McGill finished unbeaten on 43 not out including 3x4's and 2x6.

Smashing game played in a very good spirit. Thank goodness for Tibbles late call up
