HYTHE & DIBDEN 2nd XI vs SWAY

2nd August 2008

HYTHE NOT UP TO THE CHASE

Hythe 2nd XI were beaten by 18 runs on Saturday by second place Sway. Not for the first time this season Hythe's slow scoring in the first 20 overs ( all be it to some very good Sway bowling) gave them too much to do in the second half of the innings. Richie Froggett made 62 and Sean Tongs 30 for the Green Caps

In favourable bowling conditions Hythe made the initial breakthrough in the 6th over when the returning Rich Bunce claimed his first scalp of the season. However despite constantly going past the outside edge it was the 20th over before the second wicket fell to Lee Powell with the score on 50.

Gradually Sway increased the scoring rate but Greg Woods took the third wicket and Russell Moore the fourth soon afterwards in the 33rd over. By the 35th over Sway were 123 for 4 but despite Wayne Effeny and Rich Froggett taking five wickets between them in the last seven overs Sway still managed to reach a total of 173 for 9 from their allotted 42 overs.Wayne Effeny (2) and Rich Bunce clean bowled victims while catches were taken by Sean Tongs(3), Russell Moore, Pete Stevens snr and Gary Howe.

In reply Hythe were restricted by some excellent early bowling but in an innings which developed in almost identical fashion to Sway’s only one early wicket fell and at 20 overs Hythe were 44 for 1. Having seen off the opening bowlers Wayne Effeny (26) was bowled trying to increase the scoring rate and then Sean Tongs (30) was unluckily run out backing up at the non strikers end. At 35 overs Hythe were 119 for 4 but with no one able to give Rich Froggett (62) the necessary support the target proved to be just too much, the innings coming to a close on 155 for 7 giving Sway the victory by18 runs.
