Shrewton Surprise Hythe

Hythe came up 18 runs short against a useful Shrewton side in a game the home side really should have won but let slip due to some patchy bowling and lack of a decisive innings from top order.

Bowling first Hythe let the visitors get off to a comfortable start putting on 49 before Rich Froggett bowled M.Gurd for 9 and shortly afterwards Matt Howe ran out D.Wright for 1 at 59. The impressive R.Burnett had made 42 of Shrewton 59 but Paul Whitlock was brought into the attack and bowled him as Hythe took charge. At 64 Simon Wright struck twice to leave Shrewton struggling at 64-5 and with Whitlock again bowling well at the other end the visitors were finding runs hard to come by.

Shrewton recovered to 96 before Wright struck again but then decisively Whitlock had a comfortable catch dropped off his bowling followed by a plumb lbw turned down against Shrewton's best bat J.Stormont and shortly afterwards with Whits bowled out the visitors took advantage of some late wayward bowling as he struck 48 not out and a quick-fire 38 by S.Cruse helped Shrewton to 198-8.

Hythe now needed a solid start they put on 22 for the first wicket before Rob James fell for 15 at 50 M.Howe 7 was next out and at 61 Simon Dixon fell when looking well set for 27, Hythe now needed a big partnership to get on top but wickets would keep falling against the steady bowling of Stormont. Kev James made 9 and although Simon Wright 37 and Rich Froggett 25 played well to give Hythe some hope their dismissals along with Bell and Whits cheaply left Hythe out of the running at 137-9.

A last wicket partnership of 42 unbeaten by the ever improving Rich Last 28* and Jon Weall 9* lifted Hythe to 180-9, but it was not enough on a disappointing day for the home side. Stormont finishing with fine figures of 5-43 for the visitors.
