HYTHE & DIBDEN UNDER 11's

Vs LYMINGTON 'A'

Sunday 13th July

A disappointing finish against Lymington.

Looking for the positives from this end of the season clash is not the easiest of tasks. Once again Alex ‘9 out of ten tosses’ Nicholas did the job. This was however the high point of the day. Alex elected to field and off we set on yet another sunny day in the summer of 2008.

A strong batting display by Lymington including 21 by Will Entwistle and 18 for A McGregor set the tone. A fine caught and bowled gave Archie Gilbert the first wicket in the second over. David Pepper then came on to bowl and Sam Kelly took a good catch in the 5th over to give David his first wicket of the season.

From that moment on the Lymington batsmen were on top, scoring regularly in ones and twos, punctuated with the occasional boundary. A total of 306 was always going to be a tall order against a strong team and the Hythe innings got off to the worse possible start with Harrison Smith clean bowled off the first ball of the innings.

Harrison recovered to hit a fine boundary in the next over and after four overs the score had returned above 200. Archie Gilbert and Sam Kelly then took the score on to 217 in their spell, picking up numerous singles without losing a wicket. Ben Fenton and Ali Bryers then came to the crease and some fine bowling by Hugo Chandler ensured that neither of them had the best of days. Chandler finishing with 7 for 9 from his three overs. Our final pair Alex and David tried valiantly to take us up above 200 but to no avail. Alex struck a fluent 10 including a classic Pietersen pull shot for 4, and two other fantastic straight drives.

The absence of ‘coach Nicholas’ as he lay on his sick bed obviously left the team short of inspiration this week. Get well soon, Tom!

A rather tame end to a year of steady progress by the under 11’s, but still plenty to be optimistic about looking forward to 2009. The rumour has it that all the Dads will be showing their sons how to play the game next Sunday in a Dads v Lads match. A little work on the forward defensive stroke over the winter months, will I’m sure lead on to greater success next year.
