TONY WOODHOUSE TROPHY

HYTHE SUNDAY 2nd XI vs FAWLEY

Sunday 13th July

Young Harry takes 5 and a Hat-Trick to Destroy Fawley

A young Hythe side beat Trophy Leaders Fawley after an impressive team bowling performance that saw the oilers bowled out for just 59. Greg Wood took 3-13 but the man of the moment - 14 year old Harry Smith who became the youngest Green Cap ever to take a hat-trick in his 5 for 13 off 4.5 overs. Earlier the only senior player in the Hythe Team - Sean Tongs played a captains innings of 80 not out when Hythe were struggling at 28 for 3. Ben Smith supported well with 24 including 2 towering sixes.

Harry's hat-trick 14 years and 279 days old beat Russell Moore's club record of 15 years 72 days.

Toss Won by : Fawley

With both sides fielding very young teams Fawley won the toss and Lawrence Read elected to field first.

Hythe opened with James Page and the unwell Matt Young but with just 3 overs gone Faswley claimed their first wicket when Page was caught for 3. Runs were hard to come by especially off Kev McCarthy who had three maidens in his first four overs. Richard Last looked in positive mood but after hitting three fours he was next to go in the 9th over given out LBW by Woodsy. ( Good job the Fonz agreed with the decision but a year in the first will change his way of thinking)

Hythe's 12 for 2 became 14 for 3 when cake pincher Harry Smith was caught for 2. Enter Hythe's only senior statesman and skipper Sean Tongs. Things were to get more difficult for Hythe when Matt Young retired ill after being sick. This brought Ben Smith into bat and with Tongs smashed Hythe into a winning position.

Smith hit two towering sixes in an innings of 24 whilst Tongs picked up his innings after drinks to reach another 50 for the club. The pair put on 74 before Smith was caught of Dean Head. Tongs then upped the pace hitting 2 sixes and 4 fours in the last half hour whilst wickets fell at the other end. J.Stovell was run out for 1 whilst G.Woods was bowled by Pothecary for the only quack of the innings. At tea Hythe finshed on 157 for 7 with Tongs 80 not out.

After tea Hythe took to the field looking for an early breakthrough and Woodsy didn't disappoint with two wickets in his 2nd over - Petra was well caught by Stovell for 1 and Dempsey by Ben Smith for for 0. Fawley 4 for 2. Tom Richards started well at the other end with his first 3 overs going for only 9.

C.Worsley and S.Cox then took the score to 28 before Woods took his third wicket - C.Worsley with caught & bowled for 11. Jonjo Stovell replaced Richards 0-13 off 4 and Harry Smith replaced Greg Woods who impressed with 3-16 off 3.

Stovell bowled the final over before drinks and got the key wicket S.Cox for 20 well caught low by Richard Last. Drinks and the start of the 20 overs Fawley 46 for 4 Hythe still needing 6 wickets for a much needed victory. Things were to turn pretty quickly though - With 18 overs to go Harry Smith bowled A.Williams for 8 and in his next over after being hit for a 4 by Head, Smith then got his record.

First Head was caught behind by Matt Young and then the cake pincher clean bowled Williams and Truman to leave Fawley 56 for 9. He wasn't finished there - after a Tom Huxley over went for 3 Smith returned to bowl McCarthy for 1 leaving Read stranded at the other end 1 not out. Fawley all out for 57 and 19 points for Hythe which takes them to the top of the table at the half way stage.

A great effort by the Hythe team and now the big test in a few weeks time against holders Sway
