HYTHE SUNDAY XI vs FAWLEY

Sunday 22nd June

Hythe hold on for draw as Smith slaughterst Hythe Bowlers.

Sundays local friendly turned into a one man show as Fawley's Wayne Smith hit 136 not out including 12 fours & 8 sixes to take the game away from the Green Caps. Hythe's Ben Smith took 5-77 his first fiver for the club.

Playing a time game - Fawley won the toss and elected to bat first on a drying wicket at Jones Lane. Sean Tongs skippered the side and Hythe opened the bowling with Lee Powell and Jonjo Stovell. Powells 6 overs went for just 16 runs but Stovell ( still glowing from his man of the match performance for the colts in the morning) struggled and the Fawley batsman took advantage taking 41 off his 5 overs. He did however get the breakthrough with his final ball having Thomas caught by Tongs for 20 - Fawley 57-1.

Ben Smith came on for Stovell and got instant success taking 4 wickets in his first 5 overs - Godden bowled for 35, Leach bowled for 6, and Earl caught for 7. Soon after he claimed his fourth wicket - Scott Rollinson stumped by Matt Young for 0. Fawley now 111 for 5 and Ben Smith's figures 4-19. S.Jones then joined his skipper W.Smith and the two set about a recovery by drinks they had moved the score to 111 for 4. From then on it ws the Wayne Smith show. Luke Mills 6 overs went for 46 and Ben Smith as well started to take some punishment.

Richard Last came into the attack and removed S.Jones for 10 and J.McFee for 0 - Fawley now 161-8. Ben Smith finished his extended spell with 5 for 77 off 10 after claiming the wicket of D.Strong for 4. B.Bolton as then the 9th Fawley player out at 199 when Last had him caught. An early tea was being prepared but Smith was having none of it as he powered his way past a ton and with the support of Steve Rollinson (17) took the score to 235 before Rollinson was last man out. Wayne Smith finishing on 136 not out. Richard Last ended with figures of 4-36 off 7.

After tea Hythe had the manditory hour and 20 overs to get the runs or play for the draw. Matt Howe opened with Richard Last who we know will get a big score or single figures. Unfortunatley itwas the latter. Last out for 5 - Hythe 16-1. The inform Mike Bowman joined Matt Howe who was looking for much need runs to get his season back on track. Howe looked in good nick hitting 4 fours in his first 6 scoring shots. The pair took the score to 71 before Hythe lost their second wicket Matt Howe bowled by Tomas for 40. Another Quack for James Page Hythe crumbling 72-3.

Matt Young joined Mike Bowman and took the score to 92 for 3 at drinks before the start of the twenty overs. Hythe needed 144 runs off the remaining 20 overs. Three overs later Young was adjuged L.B.W off Thomas for 17 and Matt Stark was out soon after for 2. Hythe 121 for 5. Skipper Tongs joined Bowman who was nearing a well earned fifty when a direct hit had Bowman run out for 49. Luke Mills the hero with the bat 24 hours earlier - flop today out for 1 and Hythe reeling at 158 for 7 with 10 overs still to go.

Ben Smith to the crease but Tongs next out bowled by Jones for 14. Smith though looking good 1 six and 3 fours off his first 5 scoring shots. 10 balls to go and Stovell needlesly gives his wicket away for 1 - Hythe 193 for 9.

Smith sees out the over and Lee Powell left to face County 1 bowler Wayne Smith for the final over. Powell plays him superbly and for the second week running Hythe Sunday XI scamper a draw. Less than 10 years ago Hythe were viewed as one of the strongest Sunday sides around now could we beat Beaulieu !!! Will Crouchey the skipper get his priorities right, turn out each Sunday and get this side back on track - watch this space
