Prove Costly As Hythe Slip To Heavy Defeat
Hythe's
undefeated run ended with a 101 run defeat on a very ordinary
East Meon strip as the home side took advantage of some costly
fielding lapses.
Batting first
Waterlooville's Aussie C. Baumann after being hit on the chin
from a lifter from J.Weall decided attack was the best
form of defence and launched in to anything pitched up
from Weall and R.Froggett, before long Waterlooville had
reached 50 and despite the wicket playing up Hythe could not stem
the flow of runs.
Skipper S Dixon
turned to P.Whitlock and he was initially successful in putting
the brakes on and a frustrated Baumann then twice offered up his
wicket but the ever unfortunate Whitlock saw his hard
work undone as both chances were put down and from then
on Waterlooville and Baumann in particular raced away.
With the home side now well past 100 without loss,
Hythe leggie L. Mills came on and although Baumann reached a
fine 100 Mills had him caught in the deep by Froggett and shortly
afterwards he removed the stubborn L. Carroll 42 who had
supported his dominant partner well and before long Mills picked
up a third wicket bowling J.Burnett 4. Waterlooville captain
D. Langrish & M.Goddard kept the runs flowing and a third
dropped catch off Whitlock did nothing for the bowlers amusement.
The returning Weall removed Goddard 24 caught well
by K.James and R.Last then ran out J.Hudson 5 but Langrish
remained 42 not out as the home side totalled an imposing 239-5.
R.James & S.Dixon
were keen on giving Hythe a quick response and both
looked to attack anything off line but the uneven wicket was
becoming ever more difficult to deal with and although James
looked good for 18 his wicket gave Waterlooville the
breakthrough they were after, M.Howe joined his captain at the
wicket but could not reproduce the fine batting displays from the
last two weeks falling for 12 and although S.Wright played a
lovely cameo of 26 Hythe were falling further behind the run
rate. Dixon was trying his best to keep the runs ticking
over but seemed to get most of the unplayable deliveries before
falling for a gritty 18. K.James fell for 3 and soon afterwards
at 96 E.Bell 0 was bowled by spinner J.Burnett and the spinner
soon had his fourth wicket removing Froggett 8 at 107, R.Last
blasted a quick 17 as Hythe looked for some additional batting
points Whitlock 9 not out and Weall 10 got Hythe past 125 before
Mills was caught for 0 and Hythe were all out for a disappointing
138.
