Jay Catton was managing the best local youth team in the area, Wepre Youth, when asked to help set up Nomads Academy last year. He arranged for Wepre to form the basis of our Under 16s/17s Academy side and he then watched other local youth sides and invited the best of the players to join our Academy. Jay helped arrange for Connah's Quay Tigers teams to form the basis of our Academy Under 12s and under 14s sides, whilst managing the very successful Under 16s/17s himself. Jay also organised the end of season Dutch tour, set up the Academy website and provided regular match reports and got them published in the Deeside Chronicle.
Academy Director Jim Hackett, said he knows Jay is keen to improve his coaching skills and qualifications with Nomads Academy and he is looking forward to meeting with him. Good community contact and continuity are important for Academy success, so Jay's knowledge and enthusiasm about the available local talent, is a real bonus for the Club.
NOMADS SEARCH FOR NEW ACADEMY DIRECTOR BEGINS By wivey - June 10 2009
ACADEMY DIRECTOR LEVI LLOYD DEPARTS NOMADS FOR BUCKLEY TOWN:- Levi lloyd has decided to join his Queens Park and Nomads Ex-Chairman Stewart Roberts at Buckley Town. >
The success of Nomads Academy at all levels last season was a credit to the club and was due in no small part, to the enthusiasm and hard work of Levi Lloyd. Levi played a significant role in the restructuring of the Nomads Academy at the start of last season and the successful season that followed. Whilst the club is sad to see Levi leave to join local club Buckley town, we would like to thank him for all his hard work with us and wish him every success in his new role.
Nomads Academy and U 19s side were the jewel in the crown last season and the Club will be ensuring that a suitable replacement for Levi is appointed within the coming weeks.

Two new arrivals at Buckley |
| Wednesday 10 June 2009 |
BUCKLEY Town have brought in two new additions to the team at Globe Way. Levi Lloyd (pictured) arrives from Gap Connah's Quay as assistant to recently-appointed manager Gareth Thomas. Lloyd was youth team boss at the Nomads, successfully guiding the Under-19s to a North Wales Coast Cup success. Previously, Lloyd was manager at Gap Queens Park where he guided the now-defunct club to League and NEWFA Cup finals, losing out to Bala Town on both occasions, and to the quarter-finals of the Welsh Cup at Belle Vue. Tony Aldridge joins as commercial manager after a year away from the local scene. A former member of the Cymru Alliance committee, he was at Mynydd Isa with manager Thomas. "I am delighted to have both Levi and Tony join us as we look to strengthen the infrastructure at the club, both have fantastic strengths that will only drive us forward on and off the field of play," says Bucks' chairman Stewart Roberts. |
Match Report from Porthmadog website:-
Porthmadog U-16’s 3, GAP Connah’s Quay U-16’s 1
May 1st 2009 at The Oval, Caernarfon.
In a hard fought semi-final, between two talented teams, Porthmadog U-16’s secured a place in the Welsh Academies Final by defeating their Connah’s Quay counterparts by 3-1. The score line does not tell the whole story as the third Port goal came deep into injury time when a cross from the right was played into the box for Cai Jones to settle the game with a powerful strike. Port had started the game well and for the first 20 minutes looked the more likely to open the scoring but after 25 minutes the Nomads took advantage of an error to open the scoring. From then on to half time the Nomads took charge and might have increased their lead.
Straight from the start of the second period Port piled on the pressure and when a Nomads defender handled in the box Iwan Lane levelled the scores with a well struck 55th minute spot kick. Play was end to end but with 67 minutes gone Cai Jones slipped the ball through for the hard working Jac Jones to burst into the box and take his chance well putting Port in the driving seat. The final ten minutes was full of tension as the Nomads fought hard to get back on level terms and this continued until Cai Jones finally made the game safe.

NOMADS ACADEMY UNDER 17s TOUR A SUCCESS
GAP CONNAH'S QUAY UNDER 17s WIN ROTTERDAM INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT AND COME THIRD IN AMSTERDAM TOURNAMENT
GAP Connah’s Quay Under 17s gave the Dutch a masterclass in total football with tournament joy in the Netherlands. The Nomads hotshots made their way to the home of legends like Johan Cruyff for competitions in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. And Jay Catton’s side continued the form that has made them unbeatable in Wales this season by finishing third in the former before winning the latter.
A weekend to remember began in the capital with the HSV De Zuidvogels International Tournament.
Nomads kicked off with a 2-0 victory over DMV B1 given to them by goals from captain Kieran Farr and Jamie Wynne. Farr was then injured in the 0-0 draw with Laren B1, a game in which strikers Josh Davies and Wynne went close.
A second successive 0-0 stalemate, with a technically-gifted Legmeervogels B1 outfit that played most of the match with 10 men, followed. But again the Welshmen dominated, with Sean Williams having an effort dubiously ruled out.
A 1-0 defeat to FC Abcoude then ensured Nomads would not make the final, although the outcome might have been different had the tireless Williams and Josh Gannon had better luck in front of goal.
They bounced back in the third-placed play-off, however, with a penalty shoot-out success over Oxclose School of Newcastle thanks to the ice-cool Eliot Davies, Josh Davies and Williams. The clash had finished 1-1 after extra-time, with Josh Davies netting for Nomads.
Then it was on to Rotterdam for the RVV International Tournament.
RVVV A1 were swept aside 2-1 in the opening contest, courtesy of an own goal and the fit-again Farr, before Noorderkwartier A1 were beaten 2-0 by Sam Fryer and Farr strikes.
A 1-0 win over RVV B1, provided by Gannon, all but guaranteed Nomads the title, but they made sure with a 2-0 triumph over Noorderkwartier B1 in which Gannon and Matthew Halliwell did the damage.
Manager Catton said: “The lads did themselves, their club and their country proud. To go home as the Rotterdam international tournament winners is something none of us are sure to forget.”
The Nomads squad was: Jack Jones, Richard McKinley, Wyn Pierce, Joel Thomas, Ryan Parry, Kieran Farr, Ryan Williams, Sam Fryer, Sean Williams, Matthew Halliwell, Jamie Wynne, Jay Bartley, Jake Burke, Josh Gannon, Josh Davies, Eliot Davies.
NEW NOMADS ACADEMY WEBSITE By wivey - April 29 2009
GREAT NEWS AS THE ACADEMY TEAMS LAUNCH A NEW DEDICATED WEBSITE:- A new 'Pitchero' website has been set up by Academy players and staff, specifically for Academy news and developments.
The site, still in the process of being updated, is currently full of pictures and news about the highly succesful Academy under 17s side, including some information about the recent tournament in Holland which they played in. Hopefully the younger age-group Academy teams will be featured later, as the site is developed.
Congratulations to those who took the initiative of developing the site. I will continue to feature headline Academy news on this section of the clubs site and a link has been inserted directly to the new Academy site on the home page menu.

The New Saints U 17s 4 - 6 GAP Connah’s Quay U 17s
MATCH REPORT:
This was a game with expectations by all in attendance at Park Hall. Both teams were currently unbeaten this season.

The game started with TNS playing some neat and tidy football making the Nomads boys work hard and chase for possession. TNS found themselves in the lead after a corner was met with a header by their centre forward which was cleared off the line. Amazingly, the referee believed this to be over the line and the goal was given.
Nomads hit back soon after, when Eliot Davies equalised with a header into the bottom corner. Shortly after they took the lead, a great through ball was played by Josh Davies which was met by Kieran Farr who smashed it into the top corner giving Nomads the lead for the first time in the match. This was short lived though after a fantastic shot, hit by TNS’s right winger found itself in the topcorner from around 25 yards out. They then the took the lead after a free kick was given to TNS after a back pass had been picked up resulting in an indirect free kick from around the penalty spot, which was smashed in to the top corner again by a TNS striker.
With half time approaching, Nomads hit back with the move of the game with a great cross field pass by Ryan Williams found by Eliot Davies on the left hand side who crossed in a pin point cross, which was netted by JamieWynne. The score was at 3- 3 going in to half time.
After a number of changes made at half time Nomads looked the brighter of the two teams with some great passing moves and some great work by Sam Fryer in the centre of the midfield.
The team’s great play paid off after a shot from Sam Fryer on the edge of the box was parried by the goalkeeper but slotted home into the net by Jamie Wynne who grabbed his second of the game. Jamie soon grabbed his hat trick after a great through ball by Ryan Williams left him one on one with the goalkeeper. He stayed calm and composed and slotted home beautifully through the goalkeeper’s legs and into the back of the net.
TNS soon pulled one back through a shot from the edge of the area which left Nomads with a tense final ten minutes with the score at 5-4 to Nomads. The win though was settled, when in the final few minutes Ryan Williams smashed home the final goal of the game, sweetly finding the top corner
with his left boot.
A real competitive game against top opposition which the Nomads did really well to win. The next game is next week away to Prestatyn Town in the FAW Academy cup.
Team:- Jack Jones (GK), Jake Burke (RB), Wyn Pierce (CB), Joel Thomas (CB), Sean Williams (LB), Kieran Farr - Captain (RM), Ryan Williams (CM), Josh Gannon (CM), Eliot Davies (LM), Josh Davies (FW), Jamie Wynne (FW). FAW Academy League - Date: Sunday 30th November 2009
Teams: Technogroup Welshpool Town Under 17 0-7 gap Connah’s Quay Under 17
MATCH REPORT:
Following last week’s great performance against Airbus the under 17’s found themselves on the journey to Welshpool, looking to continue their winning form.

They took control of the game straight away with some great moves and looked like scoring early on. The Nomads played some lovely football at times with Eliot Davies and Sean Williams linking up well. This pressure was rewarded, when after some good work on the left hand side, Sean Williams’ attempted cross found itself in the top corner of the far post taking the lads into the lead. A second came soon after, when a great through ball from Sam Fryer was met by Matthew Halliwell who calmly slotted it past the keeper to double the Nomads lead.
The quality of football on display was impressive with Josh Gannon playing some neat and tidy passes and switching the play well. The defence was never really tested and Jay Bartley was only called into action after a Welshpool free kick which he comfortably saved. The final goal of the half came from Josh Davies who after another set up from Sam Fryer found the bottom corner of the net to take Nomads three nil up going into half time.
The second half began just as brightly for Nomads with Jake Burke and Kieran Farr linking up well and getting in some dangerous crosses into the box. The fourth goal came from a corner from Eliot Davies which was netted in by Josh Davies to give him his second of the game. Rich McKinlay and Joel Thomas were cool in defence and never looked like being troubled by Welshpool. The fifth was scored by Sean Williams who cheekily, on the edge of the area chipped the ball over the goalkeeper and on looking defenders and found itself in the top corner. Nomads continued to create chances with Marc Thomas and Kieran Farr both coming close.
Josh Davies bagged his hat trick after a great ball over the top from Wyn Pierce was taken calmly down by Josh, who went on to beat the defender and take it round the goalkeeper , comfortably finishing it into an empty net. The final goal of the game came from a penalty after Eliot Davies was
brought down in the box leaving Sean Williams to slot into the bottom corner, sending the goalkeeper the other way and gaining his hat trick.
A good win with football that was enjoyable to watch. The toughest test though awaits next week at home to Prestatyn in the FAW Academy cup.
Team:- Jay Bartley (GK), Jake Burke (RB), Wyn Pierce (CB), Joel Thomas (CB), Sean Williams (LB), Kieran Farr - Captain (RM), Josh Gannon (CM) Sam Fryer (CM), Eliot Davies (LM), Josh Davies (FW), Matthew Halliwell (FW). Substitutes:- Ryan Parry, Richard McKinlay, Marc Thomas.

FAW Youth Cup – Nomads sweep into last 32
|
GAP Connah’s Quay swept into the second round on Sunday with a stunning 4-1 victory over Rhyl at the Deeside Stadium.
Led by skipper and first-team regular Danny Pinch, whose contribution went far beyond his two goals, Nomads were better than their visitors in all areas of the pitch.
Ian Nicholls, a driving force from midfield along with Tom Lloyd and Bohan Dixon, added to Pinch’s double before pacy Kalu Ochengwa completed the home side’s tally in the second half. |
2007/8 SEASON - COACH KEN PRICE SUMMARISES THE ACADEMY UNDER 16s
One of the positive aspects of the u16s academy squad is that we retained most of last year’s players, which enables me to work with and assess the squad on more of a long term basis. I've been impressed with the attitude and work ethic of the players, which helps training sessions flow well and encouraged the players to have their input into training and after games.
The players know the standards expected of them and apart from the odd few who haven't reached the grade and have now left us, the remaining players have done well and are striving to reach those academy standards.
Results:-
Nomads 0 -1 Bangor City
Nomads 8 -1 Rhyl
Caernarfon 1 -7 Nomads
Bangor City 1 -0 Nomads
Chester City 4 -0 Nomads
Nomads 1 -1 Bangor City
Bangor City 1 -3 Nomads
As you can see from the above results, the players have competed very well and against a strong Chester City side, who scored two goals in the last minute, myself and Jim,who has taken time out to come and watch the lads, have been really impressed.
The main aim of the academy is produce players who can progress to the reserves and ultimately, long term, into the first team. I think we must be on the right track due to the fact that Nathan Jones, Tom Price and Danny Pinch have been training with the senior squad, which suggests the academy must be doing something right.
There are also numerous other players in the squad who I have high hopes for in the future. Congratulations to Tom Price and past academy players Phil Killer and Tom Lloyd for representing the North Wales Coast u17s squad.
Thanks to Steve Carrol for his help, all the players for their hard work and to the parents, for their support and patience throughout the season.
Here's looking forward to next season,
Ken Price
NOMADS UNDER 14s MATCH REPORTS - By Dave Radin - April 16 2008
NOMADS ACADEMY UNDER 14s COACH DAVE RADIN REPORTS ON MATCHES SINCE CHRISTMAS
27/1/08 - Chester City 14, Nomads 0
The nomads came up against their sternest test this season when they played Chester City under 14s at the weekend. Nomads were physically no match for the Chester outfit who fielded a very strong team, both technically and physically. However there were periods of the game notably the first 20mins where nomads looked very comfortable and played some good football. The score does not hide the fact the Nomads were well and truly beaten however Coach Dave Radin commented “I was very proud of our players today, even as the goals mounted not one of them let there heads drop, and the attitude of every player was a credit to themselves and the club. The boys have played a very good team today and this is the level that they needed to push themselves to if they wish to progress in football.”
24/2/08 - Nomads 1, Bangor city 1.
The Nomad squad turned in what could be argued as their best performance of the season at Dock Road at the weekend, holding a very good Bangor side to a deserved 1-1 draw. Bangor took a first half lead against the run of play.
The nomads played some lovely football and looked very comfortable matching their opponents for technical ability and work rate. Danny Haydon marshalled the back four extremely well and helped keep the Bangor attack at bay. When Bangor did break through, both GKs, Jake Hughes and Mathew Price coped well pulling of very good saves in each half. With the midfield working hard to create opportunities for a nomads equaliser, it seemed like it would only be a matter of time before the Nomads scored. The Nomads got he goal they deserved mid way through the second half when Tom Bonney latched onto a through ball and powered his way forward and finished impressively. Coach Dave Radin was impressed with his team’s performance. “ I think the boys have showed that the hard work that they have been putting in through training has paid of today, Their attitude and performance was excellent and this result shows how far we have come since the start of the season, I am really pleased for the boys, they deserved a positive result.”
16/3/08 - Llangefni 8, Nomads 2.
The nomads travelled to Langefni at the weekend for their latest game. Unfortunately due to absences and injuries the Nomads were down to the bear 11 which included 2 goalkeepers. However the players that were selected gave a good account of themselves and played some entertaining football. The highlights of the game were a Danny Haydon goal from the half way line and a fantastic left foot free lick that hit the top corner of the net from debutant Kieran who played up front for the nomads.
NOMADS ACADEMY GOALKEEPERS MAKE PROGRESS By wivey - April 4 2008
GOALKEEPER COACH PAT HENDRIE, REPORTS ON THE PROGRESS OF ACADEMY GOALKEEPERS SO FAR THIS SEASON:-
Connah's Quay Nomads – Goalkeeping report season 2007 – 2008
At the beginning of the season after being asked by Jim Hackett to come in and work with the goalkeepers at the academy, I thought the task was going to be an arduous one. With one recognized goalkeeper attending the 1st training session the emphasis was on quality and structured coaching to ensure that the “word” was put out amongst the locals.
Since that 1st session we have increased our goalkeepers to 8, 5 of which train regularly every Monday night, the others train when they are not involved in team practices.
We have seen Karl Crichton move from the Under 16 age group to Chester City Centre of Excellence, Jake Hughes play the whole season in the Under 14’s as a 12 year old and Matthew Price in the same team as an 11 year old! Ben Winne has hardly missed a training session which is fantastic, and we have attracted another 2 goalkeepers – 1 from local club Connah's Quay Tigers and 1 from the Academy at Rhyl!
I have been delighted with the attitude and application of all the goalkeepers within the academy, the comments from the managers have been that the further along in the season we move, the better the goalkeepers have become, which says to me that we are achieving what we set out to do – Improve in a fun and safe environment.
The work that we have done has helped me in achieving the FAW B licence coaching award for goalkeepers to which I am very grateful.
So what next…..Further improvement and more goalkeepers hopefully and maybe a goalkeeping day during the summer at Dock Road in conjunction with the community project.
Thanks - Pat
NOMADS U 14s ACADEMY MATCH REPORTS FOR 2007 By wivey - January 19 2008
COACH DAVE RADIN, PROVIDES REPORTS AND AN ASSESMENT OF HIS TEAMS PROGRESS, SO FAR THIS SEASON
Connahs Quay Nomads Academy - Under 14s Match Reports 2007
Caernarfon Town 3-3 Nomads - 11/11/07
A great performance from Nomads against Caernarfon Town ended in a 3 – 3 draw after a thrilling end to end game. The game was played on the Caernarfon Town first team pitch, which due to its size ensured that the game was an open end-to-end affair.
Nomads looked solid at the back and Danny Haydon had a superb game at centre half, steady performances also from Jamie McEwan and Mike Readey. Both goalkeepers were heavily involved through out the game and gave a good account of themselves. (Jake Hughes and Mathew Price). Jordon Taff, Tom Greivson and Jack McLean all did well in the midfield working extremely hard on the big pitch and Scott Chatterton rounded of a fine display with one of the 3 goals. The result could have gone anyway, but Tom Bonney rounded of a fantastic man of the match display with 2 super goals to make sure the spoils were shared.
Connahs Quay Nomads 1-7 Llangefni Town - 25/11/07
The Nomads went down to a strong Llangefni side 1-7 at the weekend, but the score did not reflect the overall performance of the Nomads players. Llangefni brought a strong side to dock road with some of their players being visibly bigger and stronger than the Nomads squad. Most of the damage was done in the first 20-minute period when Nomads were over run and were 0-5 down after this period. However, in the second period Nomads gave a good account of themselves and the second 20-minute period ended in a credible 1-1 result. Nomads were the stronger side in the final period of play and were unlucky not to get a goal for their hard work; the final period ended 0-1 to Llangefni. Coach Dave Radin reflected, “ We have to accept that we were over run in the first 20 mins and could not match the physical side of the Llangefni play, but the second and third periods were much better and the boys showed good spirit and determination. There were more positives than the score line may lead people to think.”
Bangor City 8-0 Connahs Quay Nomads - 2/12/07
Nomads went down 0-8 on a horrible day away to Bangor City. The wind and rain as well as a very heavy pitch made it hard work for the Nomads players. The Nomads again fell victim to a slow start in the first 20 minute period as they allowed Bangor to get ahead by 5 goals to nil aided by a strong wind behind them.
Nomads seemed to struggle with the combination of the weather and a well-drilled Bangor outfit. However after the first break and a couple of changes which saw Danny Haydon move back to Centre half and Kyle Davies move in to midfield along side Jamie McEwan on the right and Tom Grievson at full back, Nomads showed great Character and started to fight there way back into the game. With all the players pulling together it was Kyle Davies who lead the way with some great tackling and a superb work rate in the heavy conditions. The second period ended 2-0 to Bangor.
With the confidence gained from the second period, Nomads had a much better 3rd period and were unlucky not to score a couple of goals. Playing into the wind they managed to hold Bangor to just one goal in this period.
Coach Dave Radin commented, “Again, we have had a very slow start and let the opposition get a good 5 goals ahead, however the boys gave a good account of themselves in the 2nd and 3rd periods and proved that with a bit of confidence they can match some of these established sides in this league. In games like this, against good opposition and challenging conditions you see different things from different players. As long as the boys are learning and developing, as they have proved in the later stages of the last couple of games, then I am happy and not so worried about the score lines.”
NOMADS ACADEMY TEAMS DO THE CLUB PROUD By wivey - November 28 2007
NOMADS ACADEMY UNDER 16s BEAT CAERNARFON ACADEMY 7-1, WHILST THE UNDER 14s DREW 3-3:-
Sunday 11th Nov saw the latest matches take place for our Academy under 14 and under 16 squads against Caernarfon Town Academy.
The under 14's drew 3-3 with their Caernarfon Town counterparts, and the reports received indicate that they played extremely well, with the referee having a hand in one or two of the Caernarfon Town goals.
Under 16's won 7 - 1. The under 16 squad are going from strength to strength this season and once again troubled the opposition with stylish and powerful football. Ken Price and Steve Carrol are very happy with the squad and hope to be able to push them towards next seasons Nomads Youth squad.
25th November home to Llangefni
Under 14's lost 1 - 7. Despite the scoreline, the under 14 squad played very well after the first period which saw them change around 4 - 0 down. The size and power of the Llangefni team took our players (and parents) by surprise, however, once they'd come to terms with the opposition, Nomads played to their potential, and with a little more luck could have made the score a lot closer. Dave Radin was happy with the performances of the squad and the progress being made is becoming obvious to everyone involved.
Llangefni don't yet have an under 16 squad, so the under 16's didn't have a game.
Our next Academy matches will be at Bangor City (Treborth Playing Fields) on Sunday 2nd December, with both the under 14's and under 16's matches kicking off at 11am.
Our under 12 squad is now beginning to take shape with 16 players attending Monday evenings training session. We now need the players to register with the Academy so that we can organise matches for them, so if anyone knows of any 11 or 12 year old boys that would like to join our Academy setup please get them along to Connah's Quay High School for 5.30 on Monday evenings and we'll have a look at them.
With regard to the girls development centre, we are still struggling for girls to come along on a Monday evening from 6.30, so again, if anyone knows any young girls between 8 - 16, please ask them to come along to Connah's Quay High School each Monday and be coached by Joanne Reynolds.
NOMADS ACADEMY UNDER 14s LOSE 3-2 AGAINST RHYL ACADEMY, WHILST THE UNDER 16s WIN 8-1:-
Sunday 28th Oct saw the latest matches take place for our Academy under 14 and under 16 squads against Rhyl Academy.
The under 14's gave an excellent account of themselves in losing 3-2 to their Rhyl counterparts and were leading 2-1 with a few minutes remaining. Thomas Bonney scored both Nomads goals and coach Dave Radin is very happy with the way things are progressing with the squad, they played good football throughout and even though the result went against them, there was improvement on their previous performance against Bangor City.
In the under 16 match, Nomads won with a convincing 8-1 scoreline. Rhyl were unable to cope with the movement and pace of our team, and the scorers for Nomads were Tom Price (3), Sam Davidson (3) and Tom Jones (2). One of the factors that was reflected in the game was that Rhyl had a number of under 15's playing which meant that physically they struggled to compete with our under 16's, however, the Rhyl players never let their heads drop.
Unfortunately, we are unable to put an under 12's fixture together due to the lack of numbers available for our under 12 squad. The support of the local junior league teams in very poor, rather than allow us to coach their better players for a couple of hours a week they appear to be reluctant to use the facility on offer even though it won't impact on their teams. For any under 12 players or parents of players that think they could play at a higher standard of football, our under 12's train at Connah's Quay High School every Monday evening from 5.30 to 7pm. Their joining the Academy will not affect their playing for their junior league club at all, in fact it should help them become better players.
Overall, the matchday against Rhyl Academy was a success, and we now look forward to our next fixture against Caernarfon Town on the 11th November.
