NOMADS EUROPEAN CHALLENGE SLIPS OUT OF THEIR GRASP:- Quay players will be disappointed with this defeat, as they under-performed and failed to turn posession into points. All is not lost. If they bounce back to victory in the last two games, their rivals still have to win their games in hand. >

Nomads' European hopes are hit after Llanelli defeat

GIVING IT THEIR BEST SHOT - Action from the Nomads v Llanelli encounter

Llanelli, who lost Nicky Palmer on 67 minutes for dissent, grabbed victory courtesy of a spectacular individual effort from Jacob Mignorance 10 minutes into the second half.

Nomads dominated the first half and should have entered the interval with a two or three goal cushion had it not been for some week finishing in front of goal and the excellent Duncan Roberts in goal for the away side.

The Deesiders were hit with two cruel blows within the opening 20 minutes, when both Graham Roach and Christian Sergeant had to leave the field with injuries.

The first of three quick corners in succession saw defender Chris Williams come close but his powerful header whistled agonizingly close of the post, while Tommy Mutton and Craig Hutchinson also tested Roberts without success.

Mignorance, who was excellent all game, played a through ball into the path of Rhys Griffiths but he uncharacteristically hit his shot wide from inside the box.

Ten minutes into the second half Mignorance set off on a trademark mazy dribble which saw him beat three Nomad defenders, and he then unleashed a ferocious shot beyond the outstretched arms of Paul Smith from eight yards out.

With 23 minutes remaining, Nicky Paler was shown a red card for continuous dissent, but the visiting defence held firm despite Craig Garside almost snatching a point for the Nomads on 84 minutes but he scuffed his shot from close range.

Nomads remain in third place with just two games remaining, while Welshpool who entertain The New Saints tomorrow night languish just one point behind with a game in hand. Following this victory Llanelli have resurrected the surge for a European spot as they lie in fifth, just three points behind the Nomads with two games in hand.

Nomads Euro dreams left hanging by thread

NOMADS high hopes of putting seven points between them and Llanelli to make that cherished third-place entrance to Europe virtually assured, were blown apart by this agonising defeat. Now they are clinging to a single point advantage having played a game more!

"We made all the running in the first half and even when they were down to ten men we couldn’t hit the target," summed up disappointed Nomads boss Neville Powell.

"We could have changed round two or three up but they came at us strongly and it became clear that the first goal would win it and that’s what happened."

The killer blow for Nomads followed a promising opening marred by injuries to Graham Roach and Chris Seargeant who both had to be substituted in the opening 21 minutes. Tommy Mutton, Adam Dickinson and defender Chris Wlliams tested keeper Duncan Roberts without success as Llanelli rode the storm. But on the change-round Llanelli took up the challenge and one magical moment from star performer Jacob Mignorance on 53 minutes brought the goal that Powell had dreaded.

Setting off on a superb solo run, Mignorance beat off three tackles before burying the ball in the bottom corner from eight yards well out of reach of keeper Paul Smith. Llanelli had Nicky Palmer sent off for dissent as he disputed the award of a corner too emphatically on 67 minutes but Llanelli remained rock solid at the back, helped by a complete miscue by Craig Garside clear on goal ten yards out. Dickinson managed to get in a powerful shot soon after but that too was blocked and in the dying minute Craig Huthinson saw his last chance of an equaliser skid inches wide as keeper Roberts stood rooted to the line.

From welsh-premier.com:-

Neville Powell was another disappointed manager after Connah's Quay's European challenge was blown apart in a home defeat at the hands of Llanelli. "We could have changed round two or three up but they came at us strongly and it became clear that the first goal would win it, and that's what happened.
A Jacob Mingorance goal gives Llanelli a chance of overtaking both Nomads and Welshpool for the InterToto Cup spot.

Euro balance shifts to Reds
CONNAH'S Quay saw their dreams of Europe take a knock as they lost out at home to main rivals Llanelli, who could yet sneak into the InterToto Cup after an up and down campaign.
The Nomads were floored by a goal from Jacob Mingorance and were left to rue a failure to turn their first-half dominance into goals. They could have turned round two or three goals to the good but for some feeble finishing, but the early loss of Graham Roche and Chris Sargeant disrupted their day.
Chris Williams was agonisingly close with a header and both Tommy Mutton and Craig Hutchinson tested Reds' keeper Duncan Roberts while, at the other end, leading scorer Rhys Griffiths dragged his eight yard shot wide.
The decisive moment arrived on 53 minutes when Mingorance beat three players with a mazy, solo run into the box before steering the ball wide of keeper Paul Smith.
The visitors then had Nicky Palmer dismissed for dissent on 67 minutes but, despite their numerical superiority, Nomads failed to capitalise and Craig Garside miscued six minutes from time when well-placed to snatch a point.

Llanelli snatch points

Apr 15 2007

Wales on Sunday

Connah's Quay 0-1 Llanelli

THIRD-placed Nomads saw their fingers prised off the Euro ticket as Llanelli took the vital points to close to within a point of the disappointed Deesiders - with a game in hand.

Nomads had been looking to kill off the Llanelli threat by avenging their 6-2 Welsh Cup quarter-final hammering last month, having opened up a four-point cushion.

Instead, they were floored by a Jacob Mignorance goal in the 53rd minute to reassert their challenge for European Cup action next season.

Nomads dominated the first half and might have gone in two or three up but for some feeble finishing and a couple of fine saves by 'keeper Duncan Roberts.

Nomads lost Graham Roach and Christian Sergeant to injuries in the first 20 minutes and never really recovered.

Defender Chris Willams ventured upfield but his strong header from one of three corners in quick succession flew inches wide as both Tommy Mutton and Craig Hutchinson tested Roberts without success.

Classy Mignorance laid off a great ball to Rhys Griffiths but the League's leading marksman pulled his shot wide from eight yards near the break.

The vital goal came when Mignorance set off on a superb solo run, beating three players and shrugging off two tackles before steering the ball wide of stranded keeper Paul Smith into the bottom corner from eight yards.

Llanelli's resolute defence kept up their guard and not even the sending off of Nicky Palmer for dissent on 67 minutes to reduce them to 10 men diminished their concentration.

Craig Garside miscued when well-placed to collect a priceless equaliser for Nomads in a strong surge on 84 minutes but Llanelli survived to ensure a tense finish to this desperate race for third place.
