1st XV vs Barnard Castle

The results in Durham Northumberland Division Two were full of surprises, not least of which was SEATON CAREW's comprehensive home win against third placed Barnard Castle.

Seaton took control from the outset and the majority of the first half was played out in Barney's territory. It was
no surprise then when winger Liam Pape collected a loose ball and scythed through the defence to
touch down between the posts. The visitors looked shell shocked, however, when Alan Ainsley
collected the re-start ball and took it on to the half-way line. Several more hands were involved
before Murray Stockdale made an incisive break down the wing and Pape was on hand to touch
down out wide. Jeff Storey converted the first try and Seaton had established a 12-0 lead before
ten minutes had elapsed. On the twentieth minute, clean ball from the scrum was handled out wide
for Mark Robinson to score a classic winger's try in the corner. Again from the re-start, Stockdale
stormed forward and, cleverly dummying several defenders, was able to put James Lindsay over
the line. With six or seven minutes of the half remaining, Storey was adjudged to have been held up
over the line but, from the resulting five metre scrum, the ball was moved out to the left wing and
Pape touched down for his hat trick. A series of penalties then saw the hosts desperately defending
their line but captain Dan Charlton snaffled the ball and Keith Grazier made a superb break. This
time it was man-of-the match Stockdale who was on hand to grab a try of his own and take a 32-
0 lead into the interval. The second half was very much a stop-start affair, with fifteen minutes
of injury time eventually being added, and Seaton were unable to regain their earlier fluency.
Nevertheless, on the sixtieth minute, replacement John Taylor collected a wild clearance kick and
made good ground before a combination of Stockdale, Adam Train and Steve Wilson moved the
ball wide for Lindsay's second score. Danny Wilson added the extra points. Barney were able to
find a ten minute purple patch in which they collected two well taken converted tries but, when they
conceded a penalty on their twenty-two shortly afterwards, John Taylor took a quick tap and was
unstoppable as he crossed between the sticks. Storey added the final conversion.
