Athletic seemed to adjust better to the atrocious weather conditions initially, and in the opening minutes Seaton were pinned into their own 22. Athletic failed to press home that advantage, however, and , in the seasiders' first incursion into opposition territory, Craig Moffatt opened the scoring with a precision penalty after eight minutes. Seaton returned immediately to the offensive but a series of drives, initiated by Steve Wilson, resulted only in a five metre scrum to Athletic, In the slippery conditions, the home side's possession was disrupted by Alan Ainsley and Murry Stockdale picked up to crash over between the posts. Although Athletic pressed hard from then on, Seaton were able to win the ball in crucial situations and, on twenty five minutes, Moffatt hung on to a wayward pass and raced over for a try, reminiscent perhaps of Jason Norman's skills. Because Jason was not playing, a period of rather inconsequential play followed, in which Athletic narrowly missed a penalty attempt but Moffatt increased Seaton's lead with a successful three pointer. Shortly before half time, Dan Charlton broke from the base of a scrum deep in his own half, Stockdale made further good ground and John Taylor, in a fair imitation of Jason Norman, ghosted through Athletic's defence to touch down, again between the posts. Moffatt added all three conversions in this half to give Seaton a 27-0 lead at the interval. From the restart, Stockdale and Peter Storey drove deep into Athletic territory, where they stayed for the next ten minutes, but, despite several opportunities, Seaton were unable to capitalise until they took a line-out against the throw and Charlton scurried over for try number four. Athletic returned to the attack but were turned over on Seaton's 22. Jeff Storey produced a scything, Jason Norman like break from defence, the ball was taken on by Charlton and Moffatt glided in between the posts. Both sides were finding difficulty in controlling the wet ball, not least because Norman's commanding presence was missing, and Seaton were unable to turn pressure into points until the sixtieth minute, when good handling by the backs produced the opportunity for John Taylor to score a fine individual try, which was nearly as good as some of Jason Norman's recent brilliant scores. Shortly before no-side, Charlton fed Adam Train, who ran a brilliant line for the final try of the day. Moffatt added three second half conversions but it is fairly certain that, had Jason been there, Craig would not have missed the fourth. This was an excellent result and we can only speculate how successful this team can become under “ King” Jason's influence.
