SEATON CAREW 1st XV v WHITBY 25/10/08
By J.Harrison - October 27 2008
In Durham Northumberland Division Three, SEATON CAREW extended their unbeaten record, with a fifth away win of the season, by beating Whitby 17-15 in a hard fought contest played in near gale like conditions. >
Seaton gave notice of their intent from the outset when Murry Stockdale snaffled the ball from Whitby's first line-out enabling Dan Charlton to open the scoring in the first minute. Craig Moffatt added the conversion. The game then degenerated into a scrappy stop start affair. On the twenty minute mark, however, with Seaton's forwards having established total ascendancy in the scrum, winger Liam Wood crashed over to increase the score to 12-0. Immediately from the restart Whitby took advantage of the visitor's disorganised defence to hit back with an unconverted try. There followed a period of play in which Seaton should have put the issue beyond doubt but instead Whitby added a well worked second try to produce a half time score of 12-10. In the second half, Seaton had plenty of opportunities to score but their final touch let them down on several occasions and Whitby were able to clear their lines taking advantage of the wind. Twenty minutes into the half, courtesy of some strong runs, notably from Jason Norman, Alan Ainsley and Stockdale, Seaton surged up field from their own 22 and Liam Wood touched down in the opposite corner from five metres. The wind continued to cause problems, particularly with line-out play, but Whitby were able to take advantage of it and scored the final try, having kicked deep into Seaton's territory. With the clock ticking down, the conversion attempt was unsuccessful
