SEATON CAREW 1ST XV v YARM
By J.Harrison - October 12 2008
In Durham Northumberland Division Three, playing their first home game of the season, SEATON CAREW maintained their unbeaten run with a stunning 83-15 victory against Yarm. Unlike previous games >
Seaton showed no sign of early nerves and within minutes a James Lindsey try opened the scoring. Seaton then secured the restart ball and Vince Lithgo capped a tremendous display of flowing fifteen man rugby with the second try after seven minutes. Yarm scored a converted try to partially redress the balance but Seaton hit back with aggression and control, culminating in a try for Kevin Tumilty. Yarm's back division looked dangerous throughout and they were rewarded with a successful penalty. They continued to pressure the home side but Jason Norman broke from his own 22 and ran a full fifty metres before the ball was deftly handled to Lithgo, who split the defence to score. On the thirty five minute mark, Yarm were unable to deal with a viciously bouncing grubber kick from Norman and Craig Moffatt pounced to add Seaton's fifth try. Moffatt landed three conversions to produce a 31-10 lead at the interval. Early in the second half, Seaton lost a line-out but Alan Ainsley, showing great awareness, secured the loose ball and Jeff Storey capitalised on a sweeping three quarter move to touch down near the corner. Peter Storey took the next line-out 'against the head' and Moffatt crashed over between the posts. Seaton immediately returned to the visitors' 22 and Norman again produced one of his scything runs to add another try under the posts. Seaton were now well and truly in charge and were supreme in the rucks and mauls. Swift passing interchanges, featuring Anthony Rayner, saw Simon Ashton add another try and, before fifteen minutes of the half had elapsed, Ainsley again swooped on a loose ball and Lee Kidson stormed over the line. Quick line-out ball and deft handling enabled man of the match Tumilty to score the next try but Yarm, who had played valiantly throughout, produced a period of sustained pressure ,which was only broken by a clever break from Dan Charlton enabling Ainsley to score from his trademark fifty metre run, beating several defenders on the way. Yarm scored an unconverted consolation try after thirty minutes but, when Murry Stockdale picked up from the base of the scrum and made good ground, Ainsley was on hand to replicate his previous effort for try number thirteen. Moffatt added six second half conversions. Whilst it is true to say that the seasiders have not yet been tested by the likes of Blyth or Bishop Auckland, this disciplined and thoroughly professional display suggests that they will be in the title mix at the end of the season.
