The game was played in virtual quagmire conditions and, perhaps mindful of defeat in the corresponding fixture last season, Seaton got off to a shaky start. South Tyneside opened the scoring after 15 minutes with an unconverted try that was a result of the visitor's failure to deal with a penalty kick that rebounded from the post. From that point on, Seaton took control of the game, certainly in the set pieces, although a catalogue of errors prevented them from scoring until the 28th minute when Craig Moffatt scored an interception try and added the conversion. Shortly before half time, courtesy of a surging Jason Norman break, Liam Wood skilfully squeezed over in the corner to increase the lead to 5-12 at the interval. Within a minute of the restart, Moffatt added a penalty, but twenty minutes later, on one of the rare occasions that the College were able to escape from their own half, they too scored from a penalty award. Norman then launched a defence splitting kick, Vince Lithgo secured the ball, Murry Stockdale stormed over the line and Moffatt duly slotted the conversion. Seaton maintained the pressure and, with five minutes remaining, Jeff Storey applied the “coup de gras”with a try in the corner and Chris Simpson added the very difficult conversion
