Playing into a strong wind in the first half, Seaton found themselves playing mostly in and around their own 22. However the game was very scrappy and many moves were foreshortened due to poor handling. From their own put in, Seaton lost a Scrum against the head and this led to Chester-le-Street running in a simple try that the fly half converted.
Although the game was full of endeavour there was very little quality. In fact Chester-Le-Street seconds try came from another Seaton mistake. Poor communication between No.8 and fly half meant Chester-le-Street regained possession. After a couple of loose phases, the ball found it’s way to the flanker who showed some good strength to burrow over.
After this Seaton finally managed to win some ball. A series of penalties resulted in a line out on the Chester-Le-Street 5m line. Robson secured the throw and after some good work by the forwards, Stoker was passed the ball and equally showed some good upper body strength to score in the corner.
Seaton then spent the remainder of the half within touching distance of the Chester-Le-Street line but could not manage to find a second score. Half Time 5-12.
The second half was played in much the same vain as the first with little quality on show. It wasn’t helped by the many changes being made by both sides. Seaton introducing many young players to Senior rugby.
If anything Seaton were starting to dominate up front and some good hands from Nicholson and Robinson set up Ashton to score. After this the referee had to retire injured and was replaced with another who happened to be watching. This seemed to upset the Seaton rhythm and they began to lose focus. This resulted in a second try for the Chester-Le-Street flanker, which the fly half converted again.
With time running out Seaton then began to up the work rate and were rewarded when Foster showed his traditional inside step to score. Leighton converted. Despite constant pressure, Seaton were unable to find that killer score and win the game. Full Time 17-19.
One positive to take out of the game was the amount of young lads who played. 10 players who are 20 or younger played some part in the game and majority of those are 17. The outstanding player though was Shaun McBean who worked tirelessly and turned over the ball many number of times and put in some big tackles.
