North Shields V Hartlepool
By Official Hartlepool RFC - October 12 2008
Hartlepool travelled to Preston Playing Fields to play North Shields in their 4th league game of the season with a 100% record. >
Pool had a late cry off with Andrew Woodward replacing Sully Tubinor who was carrying a wrist injury and debut game for Dave Standing coming in on the wing for Dean Ryan who emigrated to Australia last week.

Pool were pinned in their own half for the first five minutes but from a scrum Thomas King broke to feed Adam Redhead who beat his man and make 30 metres to give back to King who grubbered to the touch line 5 metres from the home line. Shields threw in but Stew Hind out jumped his counterpart to take well and was driven over the line by his pack to score after six minutes with Lewis Humble converting to put the visitors ahead 0-7.

Pool were playing some great attacking rugby with Michael Hall prominent on three forward drives but the Shields defence held out and cleared downfield with the use of the strong wind.

Shields then put their first serious attack together after 30 minutes when all their three’s handled but when the winger was tackled by Standing Pool were penalised for going in from the wrong side and the home standoff slotted the kick through the posts to get them on the score sheet. 3-7

Three minute later and Pool went further ahead when from a scrum on the halfway line Redhead cut through to miss out the two centres and give to Liam Lester on the left wing who raced up the touch line and drew his man to give back to Humble who likewise took the cover tackle but also give the ball back to King who sprinted to under the posts for Humble to augment. 3-14

From the restart Alan Brown took the kick and made 20m to give to Frankie Coulson to cut through and make 40m to hand to Woodward then Dave Ryan who was in full flight but was felled with 5 metres to go.

Another storming charge involving all the front row of Steve Ward, Brett Cullinane and Hall got 10m out and the ball was smuggled back for King to put a long pass out to Redhead but he was well covered to loose the ball for Shields to hack away. HT 3-14

Ten minutes into the second half and Pool lost flanker Woodward with a torn metacarpal and was replace with the oldest second row in the Club Shaun Wiles (44) who went second row for Karl Hanson to go flanker.

Pools were awarded a penalty and Patrick Wilson put it into touch 5m from the home line. Hanson took the ball cleanly to give to King who tried charging through but slipped the ball to Brown who fed Cullinane who bulldozed his way through the Shields pack and score his first try for his new club and Humble converted from the touch line with a great kick. 3-21

An injury to Lester saw Richard Picknett make his first team debut and instantly he was in the thick of it when he tackled the Shields full back who attempted to pass back to his winger on the halfway line for the ball to be knocked on but Coulson was up quickly to scoop the ball up and race 40m and score under the sticks for Humble to convert. 3-28

The additional weight of Wiles was now giving the Pool forwards an advantage in the scrums and also the lifting of Hind in the lineouts and from a lineout Hind took to give to Brown then Ryan and onto King who fed Standing on the wing for him to side step two defenders and race clear but he pulled a muscle 5m short of the line to fall to ground with a clear run in and was replaced by Chris Webster.

Twelve minutes to time and the home scrumhalf dived into a scrum at Browns feet and King was fast thinking to take a quick tap and cut through the retreating players and score his second try under the posts again converted by Humble. 3-35.

Pool were now well on top and Redhead was unlucky following up a chip through when the ball just crossed the dead ball line as he touched it down and then a forward drive saw Hind over but the ball spilled from his grip as he was going down.

In injury time a forward charge involving Ward, Brown, Wiles and Cullinane saw the ball given to Coulson who zipped through six men and score his second try for Humble again to convert with the final whistle sounding. 3-42

This was a much improved performance than last weeks display and hopefully the Sherriff can again motivate his team to another win against Medicals next week.

Pick of the forwards was Des Hall and the backs was Thomas King
