With both teams winning their first games and both having the same point’s difference in the league this game was set to be a humdinger and true to form it was. Pool welcomed back prop forward Steve Ward who sprained his ankle in the preseason game against Rovers and with Andy Small having work commitments Lee Dodgson came in at hooker which he last played four years ago as a Colt.
In Majorca conditions Pool kicked off and in the first minute were almost on the score sheet when a long pass out to Deano Ryan from Thomas King saw the winger cut past two men and with 10m to the line when stopped by the home fullback his pass back was just spilled for Winlaton to clear from the resultant scrum. The same player was again in the thick of it five minutes later but again the ball was hacked away . Pool were well ontop and a good passing attack with Alan Brown, Andrew Woodward and Andy Palmer involved saw flanker Sully Tubinor crash over but the Official was unsighted to give Pool a scrum.
After twelve minutes the home side got into Pools half with a long kick from their 22 from Allison the home stand off but Patrick Wilson fielded well to return to the home 22 and when Stew Hind took the home throw in King cut through to hand onto Frankie Coulson who was stopped five metres out the visitors were awarded a penalty for Winlaton diving in to the ruck. Lewis HUMBLE stepped up and slotted the penalty through the middle to put pool on the score sheet after twelve minutes. 0-3
Three minutes later and the same player converted another penalty for offside to put Pool further ahead. All the play had been in the home half but on the half hour Pool were twice penalized for offside and a high tackle for Allison to kick up field and a third penalty saw him convert from the 22 3-6
Wilson again kicked a good ball to within 5 metres of the home line and when Hind took he was driven over helped from Mick Hall and Ward but again the ref was unsighted to give Pool a 5 metre scrum were Brown picked up and drove on and gain another penalty for King to take quickly for Adam Redhead to cut across and feed Humble then Tinker Williamson who was stopped short but the ball came back from Coulson to draw a defender and give to KING to cross in the corner for Humbles conversion attempt to just drift wide. 3-11
With three minutes to the break another attack from a line out on the half way saw the ball given along the line to Ryan to make ground and cut back infield to give to Redhead who cut between three defenders and pass to WOODWARD to crash over between the posts for HUMBLE to augment.
HT 3-18 With the home side now having the use of the slope and strong breeze, Pool were aware that they had to keep the ball tight and away from the massive Winlaton forwards. This they did quite successfully in the open play but were up against it in the scrums although Hall playing at loose head made sure they did not have it all their own way at several important scrums to stop the wheel. Two minutes from the restart and Pool were penalized for offside and Allison slotted over from the half way line with a tremendous kick. 6-18
Pool came back upfield when King broke from a maul and give onto Ryan then Ward then Brown and when he was stopped he flipped to Palmer and back to Ward but he was held up on the line. for Winlaton to be penalized for Wilson to kick to the corner. From the line Hind took clean and gave back to Dodgson to draw a defender and put Woodward over but he was icked up by the giant forwards for the ref to again say the ball was not grounded. Amazingly from the scrum Pool sent the ball along the line were Tubinor was stopped short then Williamson held up for the ball to be recycled and Woodward go over again for the ref to give the same decision. Redhead then put Coulson away to race fifty metres but a last desperate ankle tap saw him felled for the ball to spill forward for Winlaton to clear. With four minutes to time Dodgson was binned for what the ref said was using his elbow and with Woodward having to leave for Prop Substitute Kris Webster to go hooker this upset the rhythm at the set pieces for Winlaton to drive the next scrum forward and their No 8 Robinson to crash over for Allison to convert. 13-18
Winlaton were now in full flow but the Pool defense was equal to the challenge and even though the ref played an additional six minutes injury time all the pool players played as a unit and well deserved their first away win and keep their 100% record.
