Airbus were beaten 5-1 in the Welsh League Cup first leg, and should take many learning points from the game.
The first half saw Airbus on top and the Wingmakers enjoyde the lions share of the possession. Had they been able to take advantage of some of their good chances they could have taken a good lead in with them at the break. However, it was not to be and 5 defensive errors gave Welshpool a 5-1 victory.
The first mistake came on 20 minutes, when John Davies scuffed an attempted clearance and gave the ball to the Welshpool winger. A deep cross was met by a Welshpool header and the ball went in across the keeper.
Airbus rallied well and were level within 10 minutes. Some good work down the right by Thomas produced a good cross which was met by a Welshpool defender. Unfortunately for him the ball struck his arm and a penalty was awarded. Steve Hughes made no mistake a drew the game level firing the ball into the top corner.
Airbus then created several chances and should have taken the lead on more than one occasion. Accott was sent clean though, but fired over the bar and 5 minutes later Tuppy had a good chance, but the keeper saved well.
Then followed the second howler by Airbus, this time it was Andy Hughes's turn in the Airbus goal. A shot from an acute angle should have been held by Hughes but the ball crept in at the near post, and Airbus went in 2-1 at half time, not beleiving their luck.
The second half started much the same, but Welshpool were having more time on the ball in midfield. The third goal killed of Airbus though and came on the hour mark. This time it was Andy Thomas who could have done better. A quickly taken free kick found the Welshpool winger who had managed to lose Thomas and the winger finished from 6 yards.
Airbus then lost confidence and were trying desperately to get a goal that would keep the match alive into the second leg. Accott met a cross well, but the keeper made a great save and Andy Thomas hit a great free kick, which smashed against the post.
The fourth Welshpool goal came on the break and a good cross from the right wing had the Airbus defence unlocked again. The cross was beaten out by Hughes in the Airbus goal, but the ball fell kindly to the Welshpool striker who tapped the ball in.
The fifth and final mistake came from Steve Hughes with 5 minutes remaining. He cut out a through ball from the Welshpool midfield, and then misplaced a pass straight to a Welshpool striker. Once again the mistake was punished with no mercy and the game ended 5-1.
Airbus made 5 mistakes and were punished 5 times, but there were positives as they could quite easily have scored 5 themselves. There will be a lot of learning points for Lythe the Airbus manager, and at least the Wingmakers remain unbeaten in the league.
