Reds Cross the Border Into Scotland
Salford City Reds continues in its commitment to develop the game of rugby league at grassroots level in fledgling areas, with a recent visit across the border to Scotland. Having developed links with junior rugby league in Airdrie, Scotland, Salford City Reds Rugby League Development Officers made the trip last weekend and organised coaching sessions with local children.
Currently delivering innovative community projects across Salford, Manchester and surrounding areas, the Reds Community Team, were given the opportunity to take their skills to Scotland through Les Obre, a die hard Reds supporter and currently the coach of Monkland Warriors ARLFC in Airdrie. Over the past 3 years the Reds have hosted the junior players, parents and families when they have made the long journey south to watch a game at the Willows.
Delivering rugby league coaching sessions on Friday afternoon and all day Saturday and despite the poor conditions, Reds staff delivered coaching sessions to over 70 youngsters aged from 5 – 16 of all abilities at local high school Rose Hall, as well as distributing merchandise, equipment and coaching aids in order to assist the Warriors.
Reds Rugby League Development Officer Ben Cramant commented:
“It is amazing to see the level of interest in rugby league in this part of the world. The Reds are committed to developing the game at any level and this link with Monkland Warriors will become a more regular occurrence as we try to grow the game in Scotland”.
Monkland Warriors Head Coach and Salford City Reds supporter, Les Obre added:
“As a fan of the Reds it is great to have these guys coming up to Scotland to help us. We really appreciate the help the Reds give us and long may it continue”
