Steve McCormack Mac: In These Men I Trust
By Gavin Wilacy - November 9 2007
Scotland coach Steve McCormack has promised his players that he will stay loyal to them for next year's Rugby League World Cup. McCormack was speaking after the Bravehearts won their Euro Qualifying Pool to reach Oz08. >
"The coaching staff have made a commitment to these players that we will stick by them and give them every chance to be in the squad for Australia," said the Widnes coach, after the 16-18 defeat to Wales. "The effort and commitment shown by the lads over not just this game but the last three years, means so much to me and you could tell they knew what they were playing for. Putting on that Scotland jersey means the world to them and they gave it everything. People were appearing from nowhere to make tackle the Welsh when they'd broken our line. I was worried at times but we were always in contention on aggregate and I knew if we were in with a chance near the end we would do it."

Ireland coach Andy Kelly said after they had clinched a place on Friday night that he would find new players for Australia. McCormack has a totally different approach. "Most of these lads have been in the squad or in contention every year I've been coaching so we know each other well. If they're fit and in form next year then it's only right that they get a chance."

Scotland's opening game is on 26 October against France in Canberra.
