Prop Neil Lowe has been named Scotland Senior Team Man of Steel for his display in the Bravehearts’ shock World Cup win in Wales in October. The Doncaster Laker, who will be 28 on Wednesday, impressed coach Steve McCormack throughout the build-up and in the game itself, winning his sixth cap.
“Neil was outstanding in the Welsh game,” said McCormack. “He played out of position at prop and led by example.”
Former Featherstone and Salford forward Lowe will receive the Dave Valentine Award, previously won by Chris Birchall (2004) and Jon Steel (2005), before a game at the Lakers new stadium in the New Year.
The David Rose Award, for Scotland A Team Player of the Year, goes to Edinburgh Eagles utility man Andy Todd. “Toddy played in several positions for us throughout the season and always gave it everything,” said coach Nathan Graham. “He never let us down and is good enough to play in the National Leagues in England. He would have played for the full Scotland side if it wasn’t for injury.”
The Roy Kinnear Award for Scotland Students Player of the Year goes to James Morrow of Leeds Metropolitan University. The York Acorn youngster also got a thoroughly-deserved call-up for Great Britain Students.
This year Scotland fielded teams at three junior age-groups. The Alan Tait Award for Scotland Under-19s Player of the Year goes to Ben Parker, captain of the West Hull side currently heading the National Youth League. Glaswegian Davie Crangle follows up winning the Under-16 prize in 2004 with star billing in the new Under-18 category. The Easterhouse Panthers teenager will receive the Graeme Thompson Award while Chad McGlame, also of Easterhouse and a student at Smithycroft Secondary School, wins the Nathan Graham Award as Scotland’s top Under-16 performer.
