WOW of the Season – The Contenders!

First things first, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my congratulations to Lloyd Jones and his team for securing promotion to League 2 next season. A fantastic and deserved achievement for them, after being so close for the last few seasons it was important for the development of the club that the seconds did achieve promotion, and with the skippers golden arm of recent weeks the target has been achieved! Well done boys!

Anyway, onto the matter at hand! Last year we introduced a WOW of the season award and this has continued into the 2008 season, it was a hugely successful award that induced a great deal of banter to proceedings. As with all major awards there is a shortlist before an internet based vote, we won’t be doing any ITV phone in competitions, below I shall describe the shortlist with reasons as to why they have been nominated, and then I would request you vote on this website for your chosen nominee!

Duerden, Thomas – Thomas is defending champion of the WOWOS award and this hugely competitive individual will not be giving up his title without a fight. A consistent WOW performer this year, nominated for the WOW most weeks this season after a slow start, he did not, however, always win the award and his lack of major misdemeanours may well count against him. Thomas, this year has been more prone to silly comments rather than anything major unlike last years romp home to the award.
Odds – 3/1

Finch, Martin – Martin is firmly in the shake up for the WOWOS award again having run Thomas so close last year, again Martin like Thomas has been more of a consistent performer this year rather than doing anything massive like Paul Hague. There was the incident at Garstang, however, the infamous Isle of Woman joke, I was batting at the time but I did see the tumbleweed flying past the balcony. He is current holder of the WOW award after his celebration at Great Eccleston upon his first wicket. The experts are predicting Martin to make the podium again this year.
Odds – 4/1

Hague, Paul – A new addition to the FCG family for 2008 and the caravan man has embraced the WOW with great verve. He has not been nominated consistently like Thomas Duerden has and this may be his reason for not winning the WOWOS this year. Paul did, however, have the worst WOW day ever recorded, firstly running out of petrol on the motorway on the way to a game, he arrived at said game 30 minutes late, his first ball on the pitch was hit to him at point where he the ball went through his legs for a boundary, he then did not have his best day bowling and was bowled reverse sweeping when he came to bat.
Odds – 4/5 Favourite

Willis, Paul – The outsider of the pack and one the bookies are not convinced will win the award this time, possibly a year to early for him. Paul has had the WOW award a couple of times this year but has consistently amused with his diving in the field. There was also the home game against Whittingham where in complete darkness Paul was fielding in sunglasses, unable to see, when a ball went to the vacant third man region where Paul turned to chase, decided against it and turned back, according to the Sky TV cameras he did this 27 times before finally giving up the chase and leaving the ball for long on to run after!
Odds – 20/1

So there you have it, a run down of the WOWOS contenders, please take time out to cast your vote, as always every vote counts and the winner will be announced on Presentation evening after the final game of the 2008 season.
