Good afternoon, Paul speaking! How are we all today? I shall begin with Saturday’s events, we arrived at the FCG early for our away trip to Whittingham and were to be placed into shock very early on in the day, Thoby arrived 20 minutes early! Unbelievable Jeff! I was driving today and I set off with Stuart, Barry and Wordsworth in my car, a bit toight like a tiger but we ploughed on. I started driving out of the FCG when Barry exclaimed, “stop somewhere for food, I’m hank marving,” so we had to stop at the Shell garage for Barry to discover that they don’t sell pies!!!! Unlucky boss, maybe the Ploughman’s is the way to go now??

We arrived 3 minutes late at Whittingham to find that only our boys were there! An auspicious start as we began our ritual warm up of Thoby in the middle! There were some truly horrific challenges flying around, Keedo especially with one Martin Taylor would have been proud of! Anyway a lovely warm up from the boys that passed without any really incident. Then there was the toss, I was undecided as to what to do, there was a little bit of moisture in the track but the sun was out and I quite fancied a bat but logic would suggest conditions would improve once the moisture went. Obviously I did the honourable thing and lost the toss, we were to bat first!

A lovely start from the boys, Barry in particular looked in spectacular touch, it must be his new lucky helmet and gloves. The partnership was eventually broken but we had set the platform we required, the order was eventually jigged around to accommodate some Beefy hitting, a couple of lovely Dorothy’s Beefdog. The innings did falter slightly as there was a procession of players being Whatkey’d, a new definition in the dictionary, means “Run Out”. We did, well I did, think that Power had been given run out as well but it turns out he was down as stumped! Stumped, never get stumped, boy!

Tea was pretty good, the Sausage rolls were top draw and Barry piled into a Pork Pie, looked like you enjoyed it chief! No doubt that was part of your training for the 45 mile bike ride you were doing on the Sunday! 18 holes today as well, living the life of Riley, Barry Riley! I take it you managed it all the way round fella without having to stop off for a pie or to get the number 84 bus?

In the field we were excellent, and that is what proved the difference between the 2 sides, that and our team spirit, we had got off to a very good start with Caravan Stu especially bowling very well by bowling it around corners, after 25 over’s they were 57 for 3, chasing 201 to win that put us very much in control. Well that’s what we thought anyway! The Whittingham keeper came out without much of his kit on, and he had even left his thigh pad in the club house, we thought we were on a winner. How wrong could we be?

Having played himself in for 10 balls or so Modhi proceeded to slap the ball to all parts of the ground; there was one especially of Beefdog that was a large hit, although Beef did not have the minerals to tell him that he had hit one further in our innings! Still not as big as Woody’s though Dave! Anyway, Modhi hit a 30 ball 50 and totally changed the face of the game before golden arm Rupert took his 4th wicket of the season! We had gone slightly quiet but during a interval we had a bit of a chat and re-awoke the beast! The noise levels were up, the intensity was up and it was an extremely good performance in the field, capped off by a extremely fine catch from Wordsworth!

After the game we called in at the Stags, I think that’s what it was called anyway, a lovely beer garden, it was a good job you did nt join us though Marcel with your hay fever, you could see the pollen falling of the canopy! 30 points for the club over the weekend can only be good with a comprehensive win for the seconds and a close one for the thirds by all accounts, a great recovery having been 4 for 1, sorry boys, that’s the Aussie in me! That’s a point, don’t you lot get giddy having beaten the mighty Kiwi’s 2 nil at home, the Ashes are staying in Oz, I believe Mr McGrath was right last time, 5 nil was nt it?

In other news, prior to the game on Saturday most people will be aware that it was the Poulton gala on Saturday, we had a discussion about it on Friday evening, Whatkey was saying how he was on a float with his football team. I remember back in the day I was on a float as the Lion from Wizard of Oz; it was the proudest day of my life, ish! Anyway, before I came down to the FCG I wandered into Poulton and watched some of the floats, they were very good, I did have to do a double take at one point though, stalking the Hampsons float was Barry Willis, eating a Pie!!!! Unbelievable Jeff!!!!

Mayler Cup

Freckleton 199 for 6
K.Whitsey 69
F.Holden 39

Fylde 197 for 9
A.Furniss 37

After Saturday’s nerve wracking game it was onto the Mayler Cup, Again I lost the toss and we were asked to field in the blistering heat! We started well with Thoby bowling well with the new ball removing the dangerous opener with only 5 on the board! It took us a little while to get going in the field for some reason, we were uncharacteristically quiet and Freckleton took advantage putting on a great deal for the second wicket. We did however awake from our slumber and do very well to restrict Freckleton to 199, at one point 260 was looking well within their grasp.

The main culprits for this were a crazy bit of running, and great spells from Caravan Stu and Bomber Duerden, who after a quite shocking first over produced one of the better spells I have seen from him, especially at a time when the batsmen were trying to go large! We did field well in the end, there were some sloppy moments early on but we improved throughout the day! We took our chances, Keedo behind the sticks managing to take a blinder to remove Freckleton’s skipper in the same over as the run out as we piled on the pressure.
At half time we had a lovely tea, and a much needed rest after the hard graft in the sunshine but we did think we were well in the game, as it would prove. We got off to an absolute flyer with Rupert chinning it like we’ve never seen before; it was a fantastic start and a superb platform for us to build on. Having lost Marcel and Rupert in quick succession myself and Wordsworth took our time to rebuild against some excellent slow bowling, it was extremely difficult to score off as Frank Holden’s figures, 8 over’s 2 for 7 suggests! As we began to press the accelerator we began losing wickets and in a game that ebbed and flowed we eventually finished 3 runs short of victory.

A disappointing end to the day but it was a very good effort and a enjoyable game to play in, as we mentioned after the game, if we had to choose one victory over the weekend, it would have been on Saturday.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came down to support us, to see the ground so full was a fantastic effort, I did see most people down at one point or another and the support was much appreciated, it just shows the club spirit and from our point of view it was nice to play in front of such a crowd, hopefully you enjoyed sunning yourselves with a beer as we slaved in the heat! I would also like to thank Geoff and Vera for all their help, not just with teas but throughout the day, your support was much appreciated.

Right, I shall leave you on my way to Russia in the car originally created for the 1993 movie, The Flintstone’s but was inexplicably stolen during the great wage war of 1998 when the 6ft 9 inch stunt double of Tom Cruise was arrested for not smiling enough during a car chase in Mission Impossible 19 which was filmed on location in a Botswana gold mine which was rebuilt to make it resemble down town Lester Brown’s place in the West End.
