SEGHILL 39 - 15 TECH SEGHILL 49 – 15 TECH TECH travelled to Northumberland on Saturday to face Seghill in their latest Durham/Northumberland Division 3 game. Although they had recorded victories in their opening 2 games this always looked as though it was likely to be a difficult encounter and so it was to be as the home side proved too strong on the day.

SEGHILL 49 – 15 TECH

With several changes from the previous week’s squad it was important that TECH settled quickly and it seemed as though that could be the case when after only 2 minutes they opened the scoring. TECH kicked off and good pressure saw them quickly regain possession. The ball was then quickly moved wide left to number 8 Richard FOSTER who powered through the cover to score. Paul MOSS was wide with the attempted conversion.

Instead of lifting the visitors the early score seemed to vitalise the hosts and they were quickly on the offensive. After 6 minutes they had their first chance to open their account when TECH were penalised at the breakdown but the kick was wide of the target. They did not have long to wait for their score though when just a few minutes later they moved the ball along their speedy backs to create space for their winger to cross wide out in the corner. The conversion was missed leaving the score at 5-5.

TECH tried to hit back quickly and an excellent kick from Antony LAWRENCE saw them take play back in to the home 22. TECH built up the pressure and were rewarded after 14 minutes when Paul MOSS struck a penalty to regain the lead. Unfortunately this was to be one of his last contributions as he was to leave the eld due to injury not long afterwards.

Although nowhere near their best TECH were hanging ion and after 28 minutes several rucks saw the ball recycled before being transferred to Michael FOSTER. His powerful run eventually came to nothing as he was forced into touch 5 metres from the try line. The home side capitalised on this let off and a rapid counter attack saw them once again use their backs to break through from their own half to score a converted try. They were to continue in the same vein and were rewarded with two further converted tries before half time taking the score to 26-8.

TECH’s task was made even harder as both Mick INGHAM and Phil BUTLER were unable to continue as the game re-started after the half time break. With the side as a whole looking strangely lethargic the hosts looked to extend their lead and they did so with a penalty 7 minutes into the half.

Richard FOSTER tried to rally the side with some positive runs but all too often poor support saw his efforts come to nothing. To make matters worse the big number 8 then had to leave the field due to injury. Despite this setback TECH did pull a score back after 14 minutes. Following a fracas which saw a home player yellow carded TECH took play upfield and Kieran SANDERSON profited from the confusion as he broke through to score. LAWRENCE added the extra points closing the gap to 29-15.

This was to be only a hiccup for the home side as errors from TECH again allowed them regain control. They then effectively sealed the victory with 2 unconverted tries in the 29th and 33rd  minutes taking the score to 39-15 which is how things remained until the end.

After this reversal TECH will look to return to winning ways next Saturday when Jarrovians are the visitors to John Howard Park.
