Rovers 3rd 17 -7 TECH

Rovers 3rd 17 -7 TECH TECH made the short journey over to The Friarage on Saturday to face neighbours Rovers. On a bitterly cold windy afternoon an end to end contest took place but as on a number of occasions this season a number of players let themselves and their team mates down by performing well below the level displayed the week before. As a result a game they were quite capable of winning was allowed to slip away in the 10 minutes before half time as the home side scored 3 tries with moves started deep in their own territory. On each occasion TECH were guilty of several missed tackles which allowed Rovers to break upfield.

TECH made the short journey over to The Friarage on Saturday to face neighbours Rovers.

TECH started the game facing the strong diagonal wind. The early exchanges saw both sides looking to attack but a mixture of good tackling and unforced errors saw the defences stay on top.  Despite the errors there was no shortage of effort which made for a decent spectacle for the neutral observer.

TECH’s cause wasn’t helped as they suffered a few injuries which resulted in the side having to be re-shuffled early in the half. Despite this it looked as if they were capable of keeping their line intact until those 10 minutes leading to half time.

The second half should have seen TECH making use of the wind to peg the hosts back into their own half but initially at least they opted to try and run the ball from deep. Once again determined Rovers defence together with errors saw TECH unable to break through.

TECH eventually realised the benefits of using the wind and some good kicks by Steve TAYLOR took them into the home 22. After 10 minutes Richard FOSTER set off on a determined run. Having made ground he passed to Steve TAYLOR who sent a good pass to Peter CONSIDINE which allowed him to gallop through a hole in the defence for a try. Anthony LARENCE added the extra points.

Having opened their account TECH continued to press but they were finding the home defence difficult to breach. Again both sides were trying to be positive but neither could break through again. As the game neared its final minutes it looked as if TECH had broken through. A break by Aaron KEMP saw him get behind the defence but a desperate last ditch tackle saw him lose control of the ball near to the line and the chance was lost.

Despite still huffing and puffing the visitors could not break through the home defence and the whistle blew for full time with the score still standing at 17-7.

Hopefully despite this disappointing display TECH can hopefullybounce back next Saturday as they face another local derby when they face Seaton Carew at Hornby Park.
