Saturday 19th April 2008

Stop press: Hull have backworded on the fiXture for Saturday 19th April. A hastily arranged fixture at York ko 1 p.m. now awaits.

Saturday 12th April 2008

At Stacks Field Ilkley’s young but precocious second fifteen took on old rivals Beverley in their Yorkshire Premier second XV league match. Such is the discord in the visitors' camp, they arrived with only 13 men. Sportingly Ilkley “lent” them Tim Rawlins, making a welcome return to the club, and Andy Cromack. Both helped Beverley make a game of it and they almost snatched victory.

However tries from Rhodri Jones and Tim Barley with goals from Brendan Kelley and Andy Rhodes gave Ilkley a narrow 25 – 22 win to confirm their very creditable fifth place in the league.

This Saturday is the concluding weekend in the regular league programme. Ilkley’s first fifteen take on local rivals and friends Bradford Salem in a match preceded by a lunch at which the RFU Senior vice president Brian Williams will present their award for Fundraising Club of the Year and their year 4 Seal of Approval accreditation certificate. The second fifteen take on Hull in a match kicking off at 1.30 p.m. The big match kicks off as usual at 3 p.m.

Saturday 29th March 2008

Ilkley’s rampant second fifteen racked up 72 points to 3 against Sheffield’s second string.

The easy victory should set the scene nicely for the Skipton Properties Aire Wharfe Cup campaign which kicks off at Keighley on Wednesday evening at 6.15 p.m.

Dalesmen unhinge ‘gate with 60 scintillating points

Ilkley’s second fifteen continued their climb up the Yorkshire second XV premier league. The setbacks of early season have been put behind them and now they sit in a commendable fifth place. This is some achievement for a side regularly playing against clubs with semi-professional players in their sides such as Wharfedale, Morley, Hull Ionians and others.

Harrogate sat equal on points with Ilkley in the league table. This victory sees the Dalesmen move into fifth place.

The team has been a great blend of youth and experience with the likes of skipper Andrew Draper, Tony Greig, BJ Fowler, Nick Bell, Brendan Kelley, Jonny Shanks and Martin Hemingway et al giving the young players the benefit of their years in the game. The enthusiasm showed in the fact that 25 players showed up for selection on the day. It was important that some players in the 1st squad got game time ahead of this week’s encounter at Sheffield. The shame was that the rules of the competition only allow 7 replacements, and so all were not able to get a run out on this Easter Saturday.

With the first fifteen out of action coach Kay was able to get a look at this side first hand. Without doubt all 25 would be well able to slot seamlessly into the 1st XV. Indeed most of them have done throughout the season. These are positive signs for the club as the senior side progresses towards a play-off place for promotion to the league above. Those disappointed not to have got game time can look forward to the home encounter with Sheffield seconds on Saturday when surely they will get a start.

The 1st XV travel to Abbeydale for their vital league match against once mighty Sheffield. A win would put them within touching distance of securing second place.

Harrogate are no slouches in this league and came to Stacks Field with a strong and big side. A tricky Northerly wind would make the kicking game difficult so it was the team who could keep the ball in hand that would prosper. The pitch was near perfect for running rugby.

It was the Dalesmen who laid down the marker with the first try after first they had coughed up turnover ball, only to turn it back again for Jim McBirnie to dance his way through fairly hapless defending to score. Brendan Kelley has honed his kicking skills and he converted to give his side a 7 – 0 lead.

‘gate came straight back and looked as though they might strike, but they again lost control of the ball allowing the fleet-footed Mcbirnie to set Andrew Matthews for a charge. He was stopped close in but Rhodri Jones was on his shoulder to pop a delicate pass up to Chris Weatherby for the second try and a 12 – 0 lead.

Then it was the Dalesmens’ turn to defend. They were better in that discipline too! ‘gate laid siege to the home side’s line with a series of penalties helping their cause. Defending has become a hallmark of all Ilkley sides’ play this season and they held the visitors out. Two more superb tries followed before the break. The first was initiated by that man Mcbirnie who waltzed out of defence to set up the most sublime of handling moves culminating in Jones setting Matthews up for a great try.

The second inevitably had the silky hand of Mcbirnie on it. Brendan Kelley had one of his trademark charges upfield. Mcbirnie took it on to set Simon Smith on an infield charge. Then came 2 phases of ruck ball, followed by slick passing down a wide line that included Dan Wright and Jonny Shanks. Shanks had the final few metres to stroll over and score.

22 – 0 at half time was a great result playing into the gale. So cold was it that the referee agreed to ‘gate’s request to a 5 minute interval break in the changing rooms. Surely the teams weren’t sharing easter eggs!

It was the Dalesmen who seemed to benefit from the unusual break.

Straight away the McBirnie – Matthews pivot was effective again as the dancing man ran round at least three defenders to score his second of the day, Matthews having made the break. 29 – 0.

The next was a text book try. A well taken lineout was driven then Andy Draper fed Andrew Rhodes whose split second pass found Matthews on an unstoppable run to score under the posts. 36 – 0.

‘gate capitulated.

Tries from Sean Gilbert, set up by Kelley’s bullocking run, another from McBirnie after Rhodes and Bell had combined beautifully from deep and Kelley himself showed a clean pair of heels to a broken ‘gate from 60 metres out. Finally Mcbirnie added another as he picked up great set ball to skip over after some stunning flowing rugby highlighted by a charge from Hemingway which was stopped just short.

The scoring proceedings were interrupted as the Dalesmen once again showed they could defend as well as attack but succumbed to a forwards’ effort to put the only blemish on the day.

The final score a tremendous 60 points to 5. The large Easter Saturday crowd was mightily impressed with this slick and classy Ilkley side.

Saturday 8th March 2008

Ilkley’s second fifteen had another tough league match, this time at probably the league’s strongest side Wharfedale. Having lost to them at home by a lot of points early season the Dalesmen had revenge on the agenda. Wharfedale and the weather had other ideas. An ice storm during the first half had the referee contemplating calling the match off. Certainly a number of Ilkley players had the most severe exfoliate of their lives! However play did continue and tries late in both halves and one more contrived to their first reversal for a number of weeks. 15 – 0 was the final score. A satisfactory performance was the verdict. Full respect was given to a classy Wharfedale outfit who deserved their victory

Ilkley’s second team kept up their winning run of league matches with a workmanlike if ugly win over Bradford and Bingley 30 points to 3. That stalwart, the colossus Tony Greig bagged a hat trick, with Chris Weatherby and Martin Hemingway adding two more. Andrew Rhodes added the other 5 points with his trusty boot.

Saturday 16th February 2008

The Dalesmen’s second fifteen travelled the long road to Scunthorpe to take on another outfit that plies its first team trade in higher leagues. They came out winners in a tense affair 26 points to 24. Tries were scored by young winger Andy Cromack and his counterpart Chris Weatherby, Ian Moffatt and Pete Turner. Goals kicked by Andy Rhodes. First team squad players Ian Moffatt and Brendan Kelley formed a formidable centre pairing. This is another great achievement in the development of this highly promising team.

Saturday 9th February 2008

The rampant second fifteen travelled to Sandal for a midday kick-off. In another bruising encounter they came out winners 17 - 0 with tries from Andy Cromack and Chris Weatherby. Andy Rhodes added the goals to seal another great victory. They now have set their sights on a top four finish in the premier league for second fifteens in Yorkshire. Skipper Andrew Draper said he was confident the side would only get better and had learnt a lot form their early experiences playing the senior clubs in Yorkshire.

Saturday 2nd February 2008

Driffield 2nd XV 8, Ilkley 2nd XV 13

Ilkley's resurgent second fifteen made the long journey to East Yorkshire to take on North one outfit Driffield.

This Ilkley side, a good blend of youth and experience, was fresh from their superb victory at Morley and raring to go at a Driffield side featuring four first teamers in their starting line up, and two more on the bench.

Tries from big Jon Hutchinson, getting valuable game time following a weeks' absence on the piste, and the prodigious Andy Cromack with Andrew Rhodes adding a penalty gave the Dalesmen the edge in a tight contest. The Ilkley side are now establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in this tough premier second fifteen league.

The Morley and Driffield results are truly fine performances and bode well for the future.

This weekend the Dalesmens’ first fifteen, without a game at the weekend as result of a frost bound Yarnbury pitch, visit Sandal for a 2.15 p.m. kick off in the battle of the Titans in Yorkshire league one (league leaders Sandal with 27 points, play second Ilkley with 26 points), whilst the second team also go to Sandal for a midday kick-off.

Meanwhile Ilkley's conquerors in the EDF Vase competition, Old Brodleians, were knocked out in the quarter final tie, away at Spalding in a narrow 15 -12 defeat. That probably takes a bit of the pain away from losing to Brods in the last 32, with Twickenham on the horizon.

On the injury front Iain McKenzie’s badly damaged face is healing, The stitches (13 of them), were removed last weekend. The club’s website has had a number of posts apoplectic about the behaviour of the YMCA player responsible. It was not the kind of play expected at any level of rugby. A number of spectators, attending an Ilkley match for the first time, must have wondered whether this sort of play was normal. Well, thankfully, virtually all the league matches in which the Dalesmen have participated this season have been played in tremendous spirit and sportsmanship. This incident was an exception to the norm in Yorkshire league rugby. It is to be hoped it remains so.

Saturday 26th January 2008

Perhaps the result of the day was the Ilkley second fifteen’s magnificent victory at Morley. Having succumbed to a shed load of points earlier in the season, the resurgent 2’s travelled to Scatcherd Lane, home of the semi-pro side, and came away with a hard fought 12 -10 victory.

Tries from Lee Gilbank and BJ Fowler and a conversion from Andy Rhodes inflicted Morley’s first second team defeat of the season.

What a transformation. What a win!

Ilkley  40,  Cleckheaton 7

Despite the recent heavy and persistent rain which caused the cancellation of many rugby fixtures in Yorkshire the Ilkley versus Cleckheaton “A” team match, produced attractive rugby by both sides on a heavy pitch.  Ilkley won by a comfortably wide margin against a side highly placed in the league, scoring five tries.

The expectations of Cleckeaton’s experienced pack being physically dominant did not materialise and Ilkley’s line out and set scrum was especially strong.  Also, the home team’s second row and back row were particularly effective.  Hooker Gareth Archer had an outstanding match heeling balls against the head and being prominent in loose play.  Other stand-out performances were registered by the Ilkley half backs, Nick Heron and Andy Rhodes.  Not only was Rhodes’s tactical kicking exemplary but also he varied play throughout the match to keep the visitor’s guessing.  He also scored one drop goal and kicked two penalties and three conversions, which was good going on a clammy pitch with a heavy ball.

The game began with a period of concerted Ilkley pressure in the visitor’s half which was rewarded by a drop goal from Rhodes, after stout defence.  In a rare break out into the home half from a penalty kick, Cleckheaton scored a converted try when, for the only time in the game, Ilkley were inattentive and missed their tackles.  This was the only time that Cleckheaton led.

After a line out close to the visitor’s line Matthew Newberry crashed over and with the first of his three conversions Rhodes put Ilkley ahead again.  Two minutes after the re-start Rhodes superbly broke away in open play to put Tim Barley into space to score a pulsating second try.  With the conversion Ilkley were leading 17:7.  There was more to come.  The home pack heeled against the head near the Cleckheaton line and scrum half Heron darted over for another converted try.  Then on the stroke of half time Rhodes kicked a penalty to give Ilkley a 27; 7 lead.

In the second half, Cleckheaton threatened before Rhodes kicked another penalty.  In a game now opening up, John Shanks scored a try from open play.  Just before no side went over Peter Turner in the corner as Cleckheaton fell apart.

Ilkley were able to bring on their substitutes to good effect and the entire squad could be very pleased with their individual and collective performance against opponents whose first team play in a higher league than their Ilkley counterparts.  A number of players demonstrated that could perform at a higher level for Ilkley, which is a real boon for coach Robin Kay.

You will be heartened to know that Josh Cockerham made a well-deserved first eam debut at Redcar. Great stuff, Josh!

Is this league table correct?

Saturday 5th January 2008

Back at Stacks Field Ilkley second fifteen put on a great performance to beat Keighley seconds by 25 points to 5. Ilkley welcomed back Terence Sibanda who bagged a try, as did Andrew Cromack and Fred Matthews with Andrew Rhodes adding 10 points with boot. The prospects for the second half of the season are exciting for this young side.

Saturday 8th December 2007

The second fifteen, depleted of some stalwart players made the long and lonely journey to North One outfit Hull and came away with a splendid victory 10 – 3.

This is another truly remarkable achievement by this mainly young side that has picked itself up, dusted itself down and got their act together. It bodes well for the 1st fifteen who will surely need to call upon some of these players as the season unfolds.

Saturday 1st December 2007

The Dalesmen’s second fifteen recorded a fine win over North one outfit Driffield’s second team. The score was 22- 6. Two tries went to the splendid Mark Hibbs, a player who can consider himself unlucky not be wearing first fifteen colours this season.

Saturday 24th November 2007

Beverley 13, Ilkley  7

Conditions were good underfoot at Beaver Park with a strong crosswind favouring Beverley in the first half. This looked somewhat ominous considering the size of their forwards and that 3 of the club’s 12 Kiwis and the best centre in the club, back from injury, were in their side! Beverley now play in National 3 North so it looked a very big task for this young Ilkley side.

However, this Ilkley team is enthusiastic and keen to learn and it was they who started well with a series of drives involving backs and forwards gaining good ground. Unfortunately this was brought to an end when a poor pass was spilled at a crucial moment. Beverley hit back but were penalised for hanging on. Quickly taken, the pass went to Mark Hibbs who scorched off into the opposition who had difficulty all game in stopping him. Again a poor pass meant it came to nothing. Ilkley’s lineout was struggling with little quality ball coming. This was in stark contrast to the scrums where Ilkley edged a much bigger pack. They carried this edge into loose play and gained several turnover balls from which the effervescent Hibbs drove Beverley back.

Beverley applied most of the pressure in the first half and Ilkley were outstanding in defence. From one clean break in the centre Beverley were unlucky not to score, a poor pass being knocked on and the chance gone. Young Andrew Rhodes kept pegging Beverley back with some good line kicking and, with a bit more urgency in his play, could turn some of these defensive situations to greater profit. A determined drive by Beverley was only thwarted by a superb tackle on the Beverley 2nd row on the Ilkley line by Rhodes and another attack was repelled by an excellent turnover by Ollie Davie. Beverley were not to be denied though and more pressure gained a converted penalty close to the posts for offside at the ruck. This was followed at a scrum on Ilkley’s 22 with Beverley’s full back making the extra man on the blind side to go through for an unconverted try which brought the half time score to 8-0 to Beverley.

The second half began with Beverley forcing Ilkley errors and then a sustained attack with the ball moving from left to right and back again saw the Beverley left wing go over in the corner for an unconverted try. Back came Ilkley who were determined not to lie down with the redoubtable Kelly having a good run. How marvellous to see him back again after so long out and gaining match fitness and momentum.  Replacements made were John Metcalfe for the admirable Josh Cockerham, Matt McColl moving to hooker and Fergus Fforde for the solid Adam Kershaw. These gave Ilkley a lift and gave them parity in general play. The Ilkley spirit was typified by Johnny Shanks who came off at least twice to receive attention to his nose and mouth and still made tackles and breaks with a tremendous work rate. Further replacements were made with Andy Cromack and Lee Gilbank coming on to provide fresh legs. However, Ilkley to lose good attacking positions with dropped balls and poor lineouts. When Chris Weatherby realised he could go through his winger he made several telling runs passing one or two more Beverley players before being stopped. Ilkley support play was excellent from the whole side, especially in defence. Final replacements “Sir” Stewart Wilson and Pete Turner “Esq” gave Ilkley another lift and determination to put some sustained pressure on Beverley. From this a penalty was won and from 20 yards out the rampant Mark Hibbs caught out the Beverley defence and battered his way over for an excellent try converted by the talented Cromack to bring the score to 13-7. The remainder of the game was played out with Ilkley doing most of the attacking but a couple of poor passes meant no further score despite hopes being briefly raised by the rejuvenated Hibbs going on another great run taking several Beverley players to bring him down. Keep it up Mark.

It was a pleasure to watch this talented young Ilkley side play without any inhibitions facing a side playing 3 leagues above them. With more possession from lineouts and better passing at crucial times they must now know they can beat sides like Beverley. It could have been a different story with a lineout specialist and we look forward to the swift return of Nick Brook who would have revelled in this game as would Martin Hemingway.  Older, more experienced players who often play in the 1st XV can teach these younger players so much to everyones’ benefit and satisfaction. In this connection the writer was sad to learn that much liked clubmanTosh Palmer-Hoyes was using his experience and energy playing the other code for some reason.

The whole Ilkley team played with commitment. The back row of Mark Hibbs, Johnny Shanks and the superb Tony Greig, who is passing on his knowledge, were everywhere and backed up by Nick Heron who also had a good game. There is a great team spirit within this side which needs nurturing and I recommend all club members to give the 2nd XV as much support as possible for the rest of the season. Wins at this level are possible with more work in training to build on all the good points and eliminate the errors which tend to prove costly and make the difference. You can do it guys.

Sat. 3rd November 2007

Harrrogate 30, Ilkley 5

This young and talented Ilkley team should be looking forward to the return match on March 22nd 2008 as they must realise that with improved fitness and support play they can reverse  this result on home territory.

Despite a mix up over the kick-off time which meant that Ilkley were propelled onto the pitch before their preparations were complete, they faced up well to an experienced Harrogate side who did the basics well whilst not being a convincing National  North 2nd team.

Harrogate were immediately onto the offensive and drove Ilkley back into their half with a series of attacks which they weathered very well. Indeed turnover ball gave them the chance to break out. However, a charged down clearance kick led to Ilkley going over the top at the ruck to give Harrogate a simple penalty in front of the posts. At this point Ilkley were experiencing some pressure at the scrums but coping well with a heavier pack.

The half progressed with Ilkley beginning to make ground with good support play but giving away penalties for holding on and offside at the line-out. This led to Harrogate dominating possession and continuing to put Ilkley under pressure. Anunfortunate broken thumb injury to centre Peck brought Forde into the fray. Despite remaining under pressure, Ilkley successfully defended a scrum10 metres out and gained a penalty and although this didn’t find touch they regained possession and excellent running and passing came to nought with a poor last pass to winger Crowther. Ilkley were now  getting more into the game and showing they were capable of giving Harrogate a game.

At this point poor support play at a penetrating Ilkley attack saw Harrogate wrestle the ball back whereupon they took play to the Ilkley 22 and won a penalty. A catch & drive at the ensuing line-out saw Harrogate drive over for their first unconverted try to take an 8-0 lead. Soon after Matt Newberry went off with a rib injury and replaced by Grey. Whilst Ilkley were matching the ‘Gate scrum they remained under pressure in general play and gave away another converted penalty to bring the score to 11-0. Ilkley took to pick-up & drive, gaining  hard won ground but support play let them down resulting in turnover ball and ‘Gate back on attack.

At last Ilkely gained ground from a penalty but then lost the line-out. Hard work retrieved the ball at a turnover and Ilkley finished the half on the attack at 11-0 down,

The second half saw Ilkley gaining good scrum ball and a fine kick to touch by full back Cromack led to another good scrum with BJ Fowler breaking right for scrum half Tim Barley to go over for an excellent try. At last Ilkley realised they could take on this ‘Gate side with confidence and took the game to their opponents.

Unfortunately Ikley’s touch finding was not up to scratch and only the ref’s whistle saved them from another ‘Gate score. Back came Ilkley looking for another score and replacing the injured Matthews with Hemingway who relished his tussle with his bigger opponent. How effective could this player be, if fit and fully motivated? Despite increasing Ilkley pressure ‘Gate kicked out of defence to half way and employed their superior mauling to force a penalty from which they took line-out ball and again drove over for a conerted try. 18-5.

Undaunted Ilkley drove again winning ground with hard fought rucking. However, against the run of play Ilkley were punished when from broken play  they lost possession for Harrogate’s winger to round a stretched Ilkley defence for a converted try. 25-5.

At this point Ilkley’s lack of fitness and support showed when from the kick-off poor tackling saw ‘Gate go over for a final try with only 2 passes required. Final score 30-5.

It is clear from the writer’s point of view  that Ilkley have the ability  to make their mark at this elevated level provided they put in the commitment to back up their undoubted talent. Hard work at training will pay dividends and turn some of their very challenging games into victories provided their penalty kicks make touch. It is essential that you do not give possession back to your opponents if you want to win.

Everyone had their good spells with man of the match probably going to a dynamic display by Tim Barley followed by Nick Brook and Andy Cromack. There is much to build on and much to be proud of with these aspiring 1st team players. Go for it!

27/10/2007 The second fifteen picked themselves up from the defeat to Wharfedale and made the trip to North One rivals Cleckheaton. They put up a much better showing despite coming off the losers, by a margin of 26 points to 10. Coach Dave Duxbury was encouraged by the display, saying that, had they not conceded two early scores, they were a match for an efficient Cleckheaton side.

pics of the Wharfedale game @ www.image-and-style.co.uk

The Ilkley second fifteen found themselves up against a very competent Wharfedale second string featuring a number of players with first team experience. Their task was compounded by late withdrawals which left the side having to “cobble” a team together. They went down by a hefty score but, despite the score, they stuck to their task manfully.

Skipper Andrew Draper will have to pick up his charges’ morale once again ahead of this Saturday’s difficult fixture at Cleckheaton.

The Ilkley second fifteen continued their recovery from the Morley defeat with a stunning 24 – 12 victory at Bradford & Bingley, a North one club. Despite coming up against a mature and bigger side with a few battle hardened stalwarts who were not averse to some dubious tactics to soften up the opposition, they dug deep and came out with a win. Young Andy Cromack scored two tries in a week when he was called into the Yorkshire squad, another feather in the cap of Ilkley’s successful junior section. The “two’s” are now really finding their feet in this new tough league.

Still seeking a second fifteen scoop - any volunteers????

Ilkley’s second fifteen notched up a great win, the first in the higher league, in a fixture against Scunthorpe.

Debutant winger Lee Gilbank bagged a hat-trick, with Chris Weatherby and Rich Gray each scoring one to secure a 27 – 12.

Credit to Andy Draper and Dave Duxbury for getting the side motivated following their heavy defeat by Morley.

6 players came off the bench in this side brimming with young talent many of whom have come through the Ilkley Junior Section.
