Meanwhile elsewhere in the club there is brighter news. The Ilkley ladies were victorious over league leaders and previously undefeated Loughborough 2's. The score 33-10 putting Ilkley Ladies third in the National Clubs Yorkshire/North Midlands League.
The club learnt last week it had won the national runner up prize in the RFU President’s award for Girl Power. This is after last season’s success as fundraising club of the year 2008 and Seal of Approval club of the year North East and Yorkshire region 2008. The club is currently awaiting sign-off for year five of its Seal of approval and hopes to be one of the first clubs in the country to be awarded a Whole club Seal of Approval very shortly. It’s not all gloomy at all.
The club acknowledges that League North Two East has been a painful lesson but having learnt from this season’s campaign they can see more clearly what needs to be done to prepare for next season.
The success of the appointment in 2004 of a club Community Development Officer with the plan of increasing participation in the game at all levels.
Rugby union is now the prime winter sport at the local Grammar School and our CRDO has been given the title of Director of Rugby at the school.
The £20k+ per annum post is fully funded by the club, something quite unique for a small level 6 club.
In 2005 the RFU helped the club access a grant of £2450 from Award for All for coaching girls' rugby at the local grammar school.
This followed a successful year in 2004-5 of primary school coaching and Tag festivals which captivated the interest of both boys and girls in Rugby Union.
Coaching was delivered to both junior and senior girls at IlkleyGrammar School both in curriculum time and out of school hours.
Coaching was delivered by our Community Rugby Development Officer, Dave Duxbury and an enthusiastic group of qualified coaches with significant input from Neil Spence, the local CRC and the WRFU Development Officer Gordon Piper.
The outcome is that Ilkley RFC now have active under 15's and an under girls' teams and in 2008-9 season they fielded the first ever ladies' senior side. All are mad keen on rugby and are only hamstrung by a shortage of teams to play against. The weather has not helped this winter with a number of ladies' matches being cancelled. There are regular and well attended training sessions held at the club on the floodlit pitch which has enjoyed a major drainage project part-funded by the Rugby Foundation.
One under 18 player Hannah Bradley is in the Yorkshire elite group and a number of the ladies team have played representative rugby.
Sets of shirts, shorts and socks have been sponsored for each age group and the ladies side boasts a very becoming feminine pink flash to set-off against the club's traditional colours of black and red.
The club’s ambitious development plan which is currently moving towards a start date includes ladies changing facilities.
All the ladies have joined the club in the appropriate membership category and have shown enthusiasm to join committees etc, something that will be addressed in the spring.
We believe this is a genuine case of from little acorns………thanks to Awards for All for their stimulus and to the RFU team for their encouragement.
The annual Players dinner will be held in the clubhouse on Thursday 23rd April and, for the first time in the club’s history the Ladies team will be represented and awards made for their achievements.

Ilkley Ladies 66 HYMS (Hull) 0
Bitterly cold conditions greeted both teams at Stacks Field as Ilkley hosted HYMS medical school from Hull.
All the players shrugged the weather away from the kickoff as both teams sought early domination, and it was Ilkley who opened the scoring after 3 minutes with a searing run from Rachel Muir, converted by Alex Allen.
Indeed Ilkley dominated the first 20 minutes and added further tries following incessant attacks.
HYMS never gave up though, and their tackle rate was phenomenal. They won a good amount of ball and were very competent in passing it down the line, but were met by stiff defence at all times.
Captain Kate Delaney marshalled the Ilkley side to a comfy 35-0 lead at half time.
The large number of supporters were treated to a thrilling second half which displayed everything that is good about Ladies rugby.
Match scorers were Rachel Muir (4)
Hannah Bradley (3)
Alex Allen
Elaine Entwistle
Leslie Turnbull
Conversions; Alex Allen (8)
This was a match played in tremendous spirit by both sides, and will hopefully assist in raising the profile of Ladies Rugby in the region.
The Ilkley team have fixtures throughout the season and would welcome additions to boost the squad, you only need to be enthusiastic and between 16 and 60 yrs!
Please contact Tom Gillon or Kate Delaney, details available on the club website ilkleyrugby.co.uk.
Ilkley Ladies played their second match of the season against Hull & York Medical Students. The cold conditions did not deter some spirited rugby and Ilkley put in a fantastic performance to win well. The cold conditions did now deter a good crowd who must have singularly impressed with the commitment and endeavour shown by both sides. Some of the tackling was awesome and the athleticism out wide in the backs very impressive. One of the try scorers Rachel Muir will play for Yorkshire Ladies at Heath on Friday of this week.

Ilkley’s girls star at Malton
Ilkley Rugby Club’s newly formed girls’ squad made the long trip to Malton and Norton Rugby Club to join the Yorkshire Under 18’s to play a match against Essex girls Under 18’s.
Amanda Garner, the RDO for Yorkshire womens’ and girls’ rugby commented:
“Thanks for all your help on Saturday...you really have a great bunch of girls. I hope they enjoyed themselves...I know the veterans of the team were really impressed with their attitude...I really did mean what I said to them ....they deserved to wear the "Shirt" and they certainly did the White Rose proud....but this could not have happened without the whole support of your Club.”
This young Ilkley squad has some very promising talent in its ranks. Ilkley’s CRDO Dave Duxbury is confident that they can go from strength to strength and take on the leading teams in future years.
The fundraising efforts of the club took a new dimension this week as the Ilkley Soroptimists announced that 50% of the proceeds from their next big event would be directed towards the New Development funds. One club official wondered if the enthusiasm for girls’ and womens’ rugby had prompted thoughts of a veterans’ side too!
The event entitled “Hollywood” is an evening with TV celebrity Florist and Flower Arranger Carl Wilde. It will be held at the Craiglands Hotel on Tuesday 22nd April, gathering at 7 p.m. for a welcome drink and the demonstration starting at 7.45 p.m.
Call Pat Hems on 430444 for tickets.
The same official expressed disappointment that the senior players would be unable to attend to hone their floral artistry skills as Tuesday is a training night and the following Saturday (26th) is the day of the promotion play-offs.!

Girls rugby underway at Stacks Field
In the meantime Ilkley Rugby Club’s work in the local schools continues apace. Community Coach Dave Duxbury reckons every pupil at IlkleyGrammar School has had the chance to try his hand at boys’ rugby and the growing interest has swelled numbers participating at school and in the junior section of the club. What is more girls’ rugby is up and running with teams in two year groups. A major milestone was reached this week with the first ever girls’ match on Tuesday evening was played on the first team pitch between IlkleyGrammar School and St Mary’s year 11’s. A great game of pace and no little degree of skill was played out with 100% commitment from both sides. Clearly both teams enjoyed the experience, as did the large crowd of school supporters who made more noise than is heard most Saturdays at Stacks Field. Ilkley came out winners, but the real winners were all the girls who participated in a game that demonstrated the best aspects of sportsmanship and bravery.
So great is interest in the sport that a recent Tag rugby course for coaches was attended by five boys and nine girls. These young people will now be able to help Duxbury in his Tag Rugby coaching at primary schools during spring and summer. What is more, it is an important credential for them in their Community Leadership profile.
Duxbury’s costs are sponsored by Skipton Financial Services, Magellan Residential, Myddelton Construction and Micklegate Special Projects with help from Bradford Council.
