Official Redcar RUFC
U17s at Acklam
By DW - April 19 2005
After 1.5 seasons together the lads that have turned out regularly for the U17s are a great credit to themselves and the club. While the results on paper are not brilliant the performances and attitudes have been outstanding and most should progress into Senior rugby without any problems. >
Below is the Match report from Paul Brown but first a few words from me.

Firstly to Paul Brown and Paul Williams (Willa). Thankyou guys I could not have done it without you. Frustrating at times, but enjoyable all the same.

To the lads. Too many to mention all of you, save for Andrew Wills. As without his enthusiasm and commitment from the beginning we would not have got a team started in the first place.

You have all come on as players and people and you can feel proud of what you have achieved. Even though the results on paper have not been kind your eagerness to carry on to the death, has at times astounded me, well done to all of you.

I hope you will all move up to senior rugby next season as it will be a pleasure to play along side you and hopefully watch you progress through the teams over the next few years.

Thankyou all - Pudsey

Acklam u17s v Redcar u17s 17th. April 2005

Redcar were never at the races when they travelled to neighbours Acklam to play their final game of the season, and their final game as juniors.

Acklam took only six minutes to get the first points on the board, winning a Redcar line out on the 5m. line and quickly working the ball inside to score near the post, presenting an easy kick to take a seven point lead.

Redcar held out until the fifteenth minute, when the defence was guilty of ball watching a long kick by Acklam from the half way line. The home team took advantage of the hesitancy to score their second try, which was also converted.

Ten minutes later Acklam scored again, the Inside Centre receiving the ball just inside the Redcar half, set off on a solo run, evading six attempted tackles before going over for a well taken try.

Once again Redcar were the architects of their own downfall!
The home side increased their lead with the final play of the half, scoring another converted try, again aided by some poor tackling by the visiting defence.

HT Acklam 26 Redcar 0

With the game effectively won Acklam started the second half in confident fashion, and a combination of safe handling, speed and strength, coupled with an apparent suicide wish at times by the Redcar defence, enabled them to score another four tries in the first twenty minutes of the second period.

To compound their problems Redcar lost Dave Windsor with an ankle injury, and with an earlier injury having forced Dave Hockney to leave the field, they had to finish the game with no recognized flankers. Debutant Paul ? filled one position, and with only three training sessions behind him, acquitted himself well.

Acklam scored their final try with five minutes remaining to pass the sixty point mark against Redcar for the second time this season.

With the seconds ticking away, Redcar were awarded a rare penalty inside the Acklam ten. Liam Rogers took a quick tap and ran on before offloading well to Dave Brown who forced his way over the line to score a consolation try with the last play of the season. On a day when nothing went right for Redcar, the attempted conversion hit the post.

Special mention to Man of the Match; Full Back James Windross, whose tackling in last ditch situations was exemplary, and prevented Acklam bettering the 64-3 scoreline earlier in the season.

Final Score Acklam 62 Redcar 5 …

Although this was a disappointing way to end two years of competition, Redcar should not be too downhearted as they have made great strides forward in that short time together, as well as building up a good camaraderie. Hopefully many of these lads will go on to enjoy a good future in senior rugby.
From someone who has watched all your games, bar one, could I take this opportunity to thank you all for the entertainment, even if it has been frustrating at times, knowing that with a little luck and the odd break you could have had some closer results, and a few victories. I hope you have all learnt the importance of fitness in this game, and spend the close season working on that aspect of your game.
Good luck with your futures, wherever they may be, and never forget the encouragement and advice given to you by Pudsey and Willa.
All the best to you all
Paul.
